Motherboard mounting issue on M8/M10

Thread Starter
I just got the M8 in the mail: beautiful case, very functional and well made, so spacious and industrial. Moved everything over from my Antec case, powered up, fans turn on, motherboard (Asus P6X58D-E) power light is on, but no POST. Took the motherboard off the tray and it boots normally. Back on the tray and it won't boot.

Turns out the motherboard tray is causing some kind of electrical short with the motherboard. At different times, the motherboard's on-board power light is solid red, other times it flashes red. Looking at the board mounted to the tray, you can see that the blue metal heatsink on the underside of the motherboard is making contact with the tray. Even though the tray is coated, there still seems to be electrical conductivity that shorts out the motherboard.

Easy fix: applied some electrical tape to the tray where the heatsink makes contact, but I am concerned that the internal heat will eventually cause the tape to peel off. I'm looking for other nonconductive material to apply there, possibly some thick tape with strong heat-resistant adhesive. For now, the fix allows the system to boot normally.

Love this case!

Forgot to ask, which button on the front panel is for power and which is reset? According to the labels on the wiring, the top one is the reset button and the middle one is for power. But it seems weird to me.

The case uses conventional standoffs, so it's strange that the heatsink on the MB is making contact. Frankly, it's not a great design by ASUS , but that's irrelevant at this point. We have some rubber tape I'd be happy to send to you that should insulate the heatsink.

The upper (blue ring) switch is the power switch and should be labeled as such. The bottom one is the reset switch/HDD indicator. If not, please let me know.

Please PM me with your email address and we'll get it worked out.

Thanks

Actually I'm good, just wanted to point out a potential problem for other users who don't know that improper grounding between the motherboard and case can cause POST problems, so the board needs to be isolated from the tray using the gold-colored standoffs. The P6X58D-E board is fairly popular, so other adopters could see similar issues.

I will probably end up cutting out the section of metal where the heatsink touches the tray, but for now it's stable with the electrical tape. I'll find some tape locally, wouldn't be worth shipping separately. I should be placing an order for some case accessories soon, and you could add that to the shipment.

As for the buttons, they are definitely labeled incorrectly. I'll just switch the connections and it'll be fine.

I'm just curious, this reads as though you did not originally use the standoffs when mounting the MB. That wasn't the case, was it?

I just ordered some insulating sheet that's UL rated to 194F. It's fairly thin (.030") so it shouldn't cause your MB to deflect. I'd be happy to send you some if you'd like to try it.

Thanks

No, I used the standoffs. I think I made the mistake of not using them when I built a system more than 10 years ago, which is why I worded it that way.

That'd be awesome. Let me get a parts list together for an order and you can ship the sheet with the order (might be a few days). I appreciate the responses and feedback.

This is an amazing case!

I'm confused, the motherboard tray should be weakly grounded through the screws anyway right? The screws touch solder pads on the board (for grip) which I also believed were connected to ground. Am I wrong in this assumption? So if a heatsink touches the tray it shouldn't be a problem unless your heatsink is hooked up to a power supply or something no? The other option could be that the power/reset switches are hooked up backwards and that they apply a different voltage to the case.
