was I complaining? No, I personally love 1080p it's great I was merely making a Hypothesis...

I know, I was just making a general statement not really directed at you. Because I know someone would come in later and say as such

I prefer to read on a resolution like 1360x768 (I know, freak right?), type on 1680x1050, and game on 1920x1080. I'm a weird one. I'd game on 2560x1600 if I could, but I need to waste my money on parts, not screens.

Rather than saying 1080p is slowing down the move to higher resolutions you might also theorize that hd accelerated the move from 1680x1050 to 1080p, and that really the higher resolutions haven't been pushed out but are just on their normal expected timescale?

Personally I think it's a mix. I hope 4k comes quickly though.

As for immersion, a 30" 2560x1600 is far more immersive than a 23" 1080p in my opinion. Of course you have to go to 2d surround for some real immersion

yesterday i was at the bar and compared 2 tvs. CRT and widescreen lcd.
1. most ppl wouldnt really notice that the crt 4:3 shows less of the image. but of course there is a difference if you try look for the difference.
2. imo a gamer would have an advantage on a crt (4:3) over the widescreen lcd so i dont think gameplay on the 4:3 is that "terrible" in this case.

but on the same monitor:
i used to play on 800x600 (4:3) until recently moved to 1280x1024 (5:4). play both on max. imo there's no real difference btwn the 2 on my 24"s. maybe there is but its not that noticeable for me with my hardware.
when i crank it up to 1920x1200 i have to lower my card settings. the game is pretty much unplayable. so i'd rather at least play the game at high settings than have to buy another card. im not really a gamer so i dont have to play the game at 1200p.
i dont suck at the game i play.

It depends on the monitor though, obviously... Like a 1080p HDMI monitor would evidently display the images better than my current monitor, which is essentially a TV/Monitor. Not designed specifically for PC gaming. Ah well, it works well, colours are good, contrast ratio is good, 5ms response time. For cheap too.

But obviously it depends entirely on the user, and what they prefer. But essentially 1080p is inferior to 1920x1200.
Console games rarely output an image that is true 1080p. They upscale the resolution to make it playable.

I think it is the 16:10 purists, they just want that extra inch of sky or something. I think 16:9 is mostly a plus. It is 1/16th [...or is it 1/10th... 16:1?] less to render while keeping the pixel density the same, which means you'll get better FPS while keeping the same overall image quality.

"Overkill" at 1080p ftw. Soon to have me a 570 and this 450 will be for physx

Nothing is ever enough, that's the nature of this site. Doesn't matter if you run a 800x600 monitor, use that GTX580 SLI setup to get 2000fps minimum in CS:S
