Which begs the question.. Why on earth did you need a 2500k and a 6870 for that puny res?

Should have spent some of that money on a display.

OT: Why do many people "hate" on 1080p? Because it's 'cool' to go against the mainstream.

2. imo a gamer would have an advantage on a crt (4:3) over the widescreen lcd so i dont think gameplay on the 4:3 is that "terrible" in this case.

but on the same monitor:
i used to play on 800x600 (4:3) until recently moved to 1280x1024 (5:4). play both on max. imo there's no real difference btwn the 2 on my 24"s. maybe there is but its not that noticeable for me with my hardware.
when i crank it up to 1920x1200 i have to lower my card settings. the game is pretty much unplayable. so i'd rather at least play the game at high settings than have to buy another card. im not really a gamer so i dont have to play the game at 1200p.
i dont suck at the game i play.
You did not get my point there. I will not bother. The loss of FOV makes it less immersive, as the decreased size too, which most people would notice, even if they don't know why this is.

All resolutions see the same vertically, some more horizontally. 16:9 sees more than 16:10 in games. Horizontally. It's called Hor+ FOV scaling. Of course, this makes 16:10 have its upsides too, in a picture with more image clarity.

What you described there is the old vert- FOV scaling method that was gone years ago. About 6 years ago games started being hor+

It never was the ceiling. I hate "1080" because 5 years ago I could walk into a b&m & pick up a 24" 1920x1200 for a few hundred bucks. Now they've got 30 displays lined across the wall all the way up to 32", and not a single one of them is any larger res than 1920x1080. It's marketing shenanigans pulling the wool over stupid people and limiting my options of products to choose from. That's why I hate it.

^2560x1600 and 2560x1440 panels are easy to find. Just expensive. ^

Therefore, 1080p isn't limiting you, it's your wallet.

By a "few hundred bucks" just how much are we talking about here? My (very foggy) memory says 19 x 12 displays were 4-500 bucks 5 years ago. Now, you can get a 1080p display for 150 bucks.

That's a good reason to appreciate those "marketing shenanigans" you're complaining about.

Also, these days 1200p IPS displays are the same price that 1200p TN displays were a few years back.... So... again... They are still available. Just better then back then

imo there's very difference btwn 1200p and 1080 in gaming. unless you play those building games where the more you see the better. but in fps there's hardly any difference.

on the browsing/multitasking side there's a huge difference btwn 1080 and 1200. landscape or portrait.
i would be hard choice btwn a 1600x1200 (4:3) and 1920x1080 (16:9) monitor for me. but i'd quickly take a 1920x1200 (16:10). its all about the "up-down" for me. my style of multitasking.
