Need new AM3+ Board and RAM for Bulldozer

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm looking to get one of the new Bulldozer chips coming in September, but I'm going to be needing to switch out my Mobo+Ram as well, since it's AM2+. I'm probably also going to be picking up a 6950 sometime or a new 7xxx thing, not going to do Crossfire right off the bat but the option would be nice. Additionally it would be pretty cool to have adequate space so my CPU cooling doesn't cover half of the RAM slots. My budget for the Mobo+Ram is whatever I make selling my current CPU/Mobo/Ram combo, which I assume would be about 150-180 dollars.

EDIT: Most definitely going to be OC'ing as well, forgot to add that in.

GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 $140
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 CL7 $50

It's a little more than you want to spend but you'll kick yourself later if you don't get some decent quality parts out of the gate.

EDIT: G.SKILL Ripjaws X 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 CL8 $80

Why settle for 1600Mhz ram when BD supports 1866Mhz + overclocking headroom?...

...what was that you were saying about kicking yourself for settling for inferior parts?!

am3 likes low timings, vs high speeds
not sure what bd will be happy with yet

You're wrong. AMD likes tight timings in conjunction with high speeds.

Because the 1600 has a CL7.
There's only one 1866 with CL8 and it's $20 more.

The 1600 is cheaper, has good timings, and is fairly easy standard to find, which is what he needs being on a budget. I'd rather skimp a bit on RAM if we can have a good base motherboard.

Uhh, isnt that always true lol

Phenoms do respond better to lower timings http://www.overclock.net/amd-memory/555061-guide-am3-cpus-ram-speed-faster.html

I would probably shoot for this kit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231431

It has some nice timings and decent voltage for an 8gb kit. I bet you could hit 1866 at cl7 or cl8 or even 2133 cl9 depending on the voltage bump you plan on doing. We dont know how bulldozer will like its ram yet and how well the IMC deal with voltage. That kit seems like a safe bet to me.

C'mon guys, let's read the OP before throwing around $125 RAM kits.

I can tell you from experience that cas6 1800 is going to be faster than cas6 or 7 1600 or cas5 1333.

Like i said, that is true for any system, kind of a no brainer wink.gif

OP, did you want a 4gb kit of ram or an 8gb kit?
