6970 + 6950 1gb crossfire ?

Thread Starter
I have 6970 and game at 1920x1080 on a single 24in monitor. Crossfire to some may be overkill, but this is my first high end build and I want to see how far I can push it. I also will start saving for 2 more monitors likely as soon as I get another card. I will be using a gigabyte 990xa-ud3 board which means I'll be running cards at x8 x8. I'm wondering how much performance I'll lose by combining a 6950 with my 6970 or in the interest of saving money possibly even a 6950 1gb. Have any one of you tried this ? Am I losing a lot of performance trying to save a measly 100$ ? That would be silly considering the total money I have invested in my rig. Any thoughts, experiences, suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you pair a 6970 and a 6950 2GB in CF you'll end up with a 6950 2GB CF setup, that won't be that far away of a 6970+6970 CF. For a 1920x1080 resolution i wouldn't worry about it, although if you have the money to spend, go and buy a 6970 2GB.

1GB will bottleneck you, in quite a few games.

1gb will bottleneck even when paired with the 6970 ? I was hoping the 6950 1gb would help since the speeds are near equal and the ram wouldn't matter because of the single monitor. I guess it doesnt work that way ?

But I'm not gonna go cheap to sacrifice a large amount of performance. Maybe I'll find a deal in a nice used 6970. Thanks for your help so far.

You'll only have 1Gb of VRAM then, best to wait until you can get a 6950 2GB or a 6970

how will I have only 1gb of vram when I'm talking about combining the 6950 with the 6970 I already have ? Is it a "chain is only as strong as it's weakest link" kinda thing ? Sorry for the silly questions, this is my first attempt at crossfire.

Bottlenecking is tangential and out of the scope of your question.

^^This. Crossfire/SLI is limited to the vram amount of the card with the smallest amount of vram. With a 1gb card, your 6970 will only have 1gb vram to use in crossfire. In other words, you will be wasting the 6970's 2gb vram.

You can try to find a 6950 that unlocks as there are still some out there, just no 1GB version unlocks (and again you would be limited to 1GB as memory isn't combined) so you would need to get a 2GB version.
