Correct.
My PPC 6600 [intro date,Nov. 2005,IIRC] doesn't need a stylus to operate it either.

They innovate nonetheless, no one said they would be stopping doing that. The legal team is quite different from the one that decides the specs on a macbook pro.

Usually Apple is the one that sets the standard, everyone just waits for them to release great ideas and then piggy back on them with alternate, some times more advanced only because they have more iterations of a particular product in an industry eg: phones.

HTC is guilty of infringing on Apple's Patents (see, Apple had a reason to sue), and Apple is guilty of infringing on HTC's newly acquired S3 patents (see, HTC had a reason to sue).
What I'm fired up about, is how vague their patent is. Essentially EVERY phone is guilty of "infringing" on Apple's "patent"

I wouldn't be happy about HTC devices being "banned" but I'm not fired up about that because I'd just find a way to get one to work from overseas.
They could probably take out RIM if they felt like it.

This is how competition works, one person does one thing, another improves, and another, and another.

Somehow, people have come to the conclusion that no one has any unique ideas, and that Apple is the only one that changes anything.

I challenge you to look at PalmOS and tell me that iOS isn't just an improved version of it.

Also, that slide to unlock feature was an app I had on my old Palm.

Apple's marketing is superb, and it's scary how well it's worked on the masses.

Actually its the other way around. They come up with the ideas, then they wait for Apple to steal them and convince the public to buy them. The only reason other companies aren't releasing things first is because they lack the marketing power to convince the public to buy into something new.

Apple is a big reason why they have a whole wall devoted to tablet demos in Bestbuy, but pretty much everyone and his dog was developing Tegra 2 based Android tablets months before anyone had even heard of the iPad. The NotionInk Adam, HP TouchPad, Dell Streak, and dozens of prototypes.

Its easy to forget that HP had this:

back when everyone was thinking this:

Now who's copying who

The problem here is that Apple are sending out those nukes and essentially attacking other countries because they are about to become an important competitor in the world economy (a super power).

You just need to scale down what I said to a smaller level but metaphorically, they are like situations. (many factors change but the idea of having the nukes for protection stays the same)

That analogy pretty much sums up the other quote that lordikon had posted. It is important to look at it as a (patent) war like you two say just so that you can have the correct perspective on some of these articles and issues that we keep hearing about.

Once that idea is grasped, it is easy to see a little more on Apples side that this has just as much to do with PR protection as it does with market share and profits. Some big wig probably said something like "Why wait around for someone to attack us with patent suits when we can strike first and slow down the competition at the same time." It is kind of win/win for them as being seen as a patent troll is not going to hurt their image and stocks like it would if someone had attacked them first.

Having said that though, we will have to see how far they take things if these patent strikes are just laying out their cards to intimidate an attack against them or if they really are trying to start a war. I do not believe that a patent war is financially justifiable myself, as they usually end up with settlements.

Patents are evil

The idea of locking down an idea is retarded

If you have the idea, implement it or shutup

And virtually all of those were in response to the rumored iPad. Every one of those companies knew Apple was going to blow them away so they scrambled and brought a ton of vaporware to CES that year. All of those tablets you listed are utter flops by the way. The original iPad is still miles better than almost every tablet on the market, and the iPad 2 is WAY ahead. Nothing comes close.
