My CM Storm Spawn Experience

I finally got my spawn today and I thought I would share my opinion of the mouse. I was told there would be an extra set of mouse feet included in the box but I didn't get any.

Sensor quality

This is the most important part of a mouse to me and the first thing I look at before buying one. Unfortunately despite all the praise this mouse gets I was very disappointed. I tested the spawn on my Puretrak Talent and on my Razer Goliathus Speed with firmware 32 and 30a.

First off the 800 CPI setting is still bugged, I get obvious cursor wander/jitter. If I set the CPI to 1800 it tracks fine. This behavior is present on both the talent and the goliathus speed. Click this paint image to see what I'm talking about.

attachment.php?attachmentid=221632&stc=1&d=1311704372

I used the 1800 CPI setting to test the perfect control speed in CSS and TF2 with raw input. I used this setting because the DA is the only flawless tracking mouse I own which has the same 1800 CPI setting. Tests at 3500CPI were inconsistent and showed negative acceleration but I don't know if that's because of the game engine or the sensor. After using the DA at the same in-game sens and CPI I knew the spawn was the problem.

Using firmware 32 the perfect control speed is laughable. Anyone who plays at a medium sensitivity will feel negative acceleration and it's absolutely unusable for a low sensitivity users.

Firmware 30a allows for a noticeably higher perfect control speed but it's still MUCH lower than my 3G Deathadder which I'm using to test this mouse against. Unfortunately I feel that the perfect control speed is too low for me even with this firmware because it's right around the speed I hit while playing and I don't want to be randomly hitting negative acceleration.

I didn't notice any amount of positive acceleration.

Buttons

Nothing negative to say here, all of the buttons feel acceptable, maybe a little too soft. I prefer my left and right mouse buttons to require more force to click similar to the Xai's but it isn't a deal breaker or anything.

Lift off distance

It takes the height of around three CD's (3.6mm~) to stop tracking on both the Puretrak Talent and the Goliathus speed which I consider too high. This was with the 30a firmware. I didn't bother testing the LOD with the other firmwares because the perfect control speed was so low it wouldn't matter if it was nice and low

Shape, weight and surface material

Excellent, Excellent and Excellent. When I first put my hand on this mouse my pinky felt out of place because my ring finger is usually right next to it but It only took a few minutes to get used to it and it feels great. The cord is annoyingly thick though.... All mice should have really thin cords just like the one found on the DA 3G.

Scroll wheel

I don't know if its the same on all of them but the scroll wheel on mine takes a lot more force to rotate than any other mouse I have tried. I think its too stiff but It might loosen up with use.

Conclusion

I'm disappointed with it, I think the spawn was over hyped. I'm still trying to decide if I want to try raising my sensitivity to keep this mouse but that's not something I'm too happy about being forced to do especially when I use a medium sensitivity, not something crazy low.

To put things in perspective my 3G DA has a lower lift off distance a much higher perfect control speed and a thin flexible cord.

Returning it just means more money out of my pocket. If it was free to return and get a full refund then I would package it up right now and send it out. CM wants a 15% restocking fee so returning this mouse is going to cost me about $14. Thanks so much CM!!!!

UPDATE- I decided to return it and give CM their lovely restocking fee. After playing for about an hour I had the spawn spaz out on me and throw the crosshair to the sky twice during that hour.

Others mentioning the same flaws before I received mine:

Mentioned the Jitter at 800DPI.

The best setting is 1800 CPI, which is btw closer to 1600 CPI as far as I measured it (my mistake, it's about 1750CPI). It's really good, nothing to add. Notice on fw 31 max speed is ~1.2 m/s on my completely black mousepad - unplayable for me. What's the point of ultra low LOD when there's negative acceleration during fast turning?

Second in terms of tracking is 3500 CPI, but it's jittering slightly. I don't use speed so high and I haven't yet seen a mouse without any jitter at ~3500 CPI, so I don't mind and don't care.

The 800 CPI is jittering with any fw, but only at certain angles, diagonal movement mostly. It's hard to understand for me, how it's possible to screw the lowest setting. It could be interpolated from 1800 with ease, and should perform exactly the same way. As I'm low sens player I consider having flawless-tracking low-CPI-setting important. So far the only reasonable solution is to set 1800 CPI and lower Windows' speed setting to 3/11 resulting in something about 400-450 CPI. Come on CM, why custom interpolated CPI settings aren't possible in your software? Even A4Tech have done this pretty well except lies about max CPI of course tongue.gif .

"But we have to admit it isn't exactly built for speed. If I was still playing my old iCTF, I'd have to use another mouse. "

"Not skip. But negative acceleration is noticeable and measurable.

I just tested with the MX518 @ 400dpi @ 500hz to compare.
The MX518 can do a lot higher speeds than the Spawn before hitting neg.acc. (@ 1600DPi the MX518 does a lot worse than the Spawn, though)

Tested on Zowie G-TF in Quake Live, using Raw Input. "

"I don't know. I have no way of measuring it exactly.

All I can say is that the MX518 @ 400dpi @ 500hz can go faster - quite a bit faster.

At least with the two units I have. And I don't think I have a faulty Spawn.

I upgraded to latest FW btw. The neg. acc. appears to have been stably at the same speed in all FWs I've tried with. "

- spawn only has around 2m/s perfect control, sensor isn't that good.

"im not talking about a3090 overall, im talking about spawn and it only got those 2m/s after which it skips (at least with latest firmwares)"

"spawn skips on high speeds"

"it's not about measuring it
im easily able to make it skip nearly as easy as wmo/ime/imo with my 36cm/360 which isn't even really that low sens
sensor itself might be good, but current spawn realization doesn't use it's potential properly"

"tested on several mousepads"

I figured as much when it came to the 800 CPI setting.

So 1800 CPI + 30A= no problems?

N/m I re-read your info on 3500 .

I forgot to make that clear in my review, all the perfect control speed testing was done at the 1800 CPI step. After noticing the jitter on the 900 CPI step I swapped over to 1800.

that stinks, I thought those bugs were worked out. I for one can say the zowie mico is good on 800 dpi.

Plenty praise the spawn like that too, unfortunately I can't trust anyone it seems.

WHATTTTTTTT?!
I dont have any jitter issue! and my quick switchs is over 1.67.
I really dont know what to tell you guy..I tend to feel any kind of accelration and jitter and tested all both and nothing is wrong.

My spawn works fine on my Destructor, 9HD, Qck and Sargas 360...
Maybe you got a bad one or dirt on the lense?

I have gone through many mouses in the market and only found the Kinzu totally unusable...

How do you test for jitter exactly?

Move the mouse in different angles, If the cursor wanders from side to side like the 800CPI shows then its jittering, if it tracks your movements properly like the 1800CPI shows then there isn't jitter.
