My CM Storm Spawn Experience - Page 8

My calculations are using the 800 cpi setting, which I tested to be accurate for very slow movement, and for faster (but not nearly my maximum possible) speed movement. Basically I wanted to be confident that the mouse wasn't showing any built-in acceleration, before using "800" as a fixed term in my Excel formula. EPP is unchecked in the mouse settings, acceleration is turned off in the Spawn configuration software, and I am using the MarkC mousefix as well, just to be absolutely sure. The maximum counts per sample is 127, which indicates an 8-bit limitation somewhere in the processing chain, at least at 500 Hz. I used the millisecond values reported by the mouselogger, to determine the interval between samples (subtracting the millisecond value of the previous sample from the millisecond value of the sample that I was calculating the speed for); I did not just use "2 milliseconds" as a fixed value, even though the polling rate was a steady 500 Hz. I am sure I exceeded 2.016 m/s, because the calculated speed suddenly goes flat in the middle of the movement. Some folks might call this clipping, others might describe it as negative acceleration, but it's basically the same thing. Note that the mouse continues to track, it just can't report a higher count than 127. That number, 2.016 m/s, that I stated comes from ((((127 counts)/(800 counts/inch))*(0.0254 m/inch))/(2 ms))*(1000 ms/s)

This negative accel seems to be shared by the Valor, as I was able to make the Valor skip on any DPI setting if I tried to do so. So by my count that's two 3090 mice that are showing low perfect control speeds. For reference, I used and loved a 3.0 for ages without having noticeable accel problems (bumped to 500hz), I'm quite capable of making it stop tracking but I have to swing my arm pretty intensely to do so... definitely to a point where there's no way I would do it in a game. It was actually more noticeable on the Valor.

I read a response saying the Spawn worked much better on a hard pad - I found this to be the case when I had my Valor as well, it would not skip on my Zowie Swift, but had issues with my qck, talent, goliathus, and everglide titan.

It could be two isolated cases, but I'm doubting it. I decided to go with a g400 instead.

Yeah that seems to be the situation for me. The mouse has been fine in some QL and CoD so far today. I haven't felt the need to throw it at a wall yet.

edit: been playing with it for a good 5-6 hours now. Looks like it's a keeper. Will have to see how my wrist holds up with the small size long-term. I stuck with 1800DPI to avoid any potential issues with 800; that puts me at a whopping 0.7 sensitivity in-game for about 33cm/360. Using a 42cm-wide Xtrac Ripper black cloth pad, no noticable negative accel on that specific pad. I have a filco ninja showing up tomorrow too so its been peripheral heaven this week.

Why would they make a sensor that's better on hard surfaces? Don't most people use soft pads?

Hard surfaces are technically more stable and less prone to depression and deformation from the pressure from the mouse's weight and user's hand. With depression and deformation of cloth pad, it will cause the mouse to track less consistently.

I'm no scientist but this is what I believe.

Negative accel and skipping are two different things. With negative accel, the mouse continues to report movement, but the movement counts are typically clipped at some maximum value, in the Spawn's case @ 800 cpi and 500 Hz, that maximum value is 127. The mouse apparently continues to track, it just can't report all of the movement, due to some hardware/firmware/software limitation, but probably not due to the sensor itself. With skipping, the mouse movement reports drop to zero, or to some low false value, indicating that the sensor has lost tracking vs. the surface, momentarily or altogether. It's true, in both cases, the mouse reports less movement than it should, but they are distinctly different. That's why I've said that I can't make my Spawn skip, and that the negative accel begins at 2.016 m/s, these two statements don't contradict each other. I've also got a Valor, that I didn't play with much at all, that I'm saving for a Frankenmouse project, since the shape didn't suit me. Especially, with all of the firmware problems with it that folks have reported, I haven't bothered with any in-depth testing; I'll wait for a firmware fix, before I plug the Valor in again.

Derp, what is your favorite current mouse/ which do you use primarily.

And what mouse are you looking forward to.

I'm currently using a deathadder 3G. Unfortunately the palm shape/weight isn't for me (After trying various mice with different shapes and grips I found that I play much better with a claw grip on ambidextrous mice), the feet had to be doubled up because the belly of the mouse drags without the extra clearance and the scroll wheel is broken but the sensor is absolutely flawless.

The mouse that I distinctly remember being the most accurate with by FAR was with the Razer Abyssus on the inside of a square of cardboard cut from a cereal box.... Yes I'm being serious . The cardboard had a waxy coating which felt like a medium speed cloth, the abyssus wouldn't jitter on it and the lift off distance was down to barely over one CD. Sadly neither the cardboard or the mouse lasted very long. Hard pads are too fast for my liking and cloth pads jittered with it.

My favorite shape is the kinzu shape, that's an easy decision to make. I liked its shape/weight so much that I kept trying to adapt to its sensor which has very heavy prediction, lots of positive accel and a somewhat low perfect control speed. But in the end it was just impossible..... AWFUL sensor.

My favorite sensor would be the s3888 found in the Deathadder 3.5G and the Abyssus. It has proven to have low prediction, a high perfect control speed and with newer firmwares it has zero jitter problems.

Combine the two with an acceptable lift off distance under 2.4mm and I wouldn't need to buy another mouse again. I thought the Valor would be the palm version of what I wanted and the CM storm spawn would be the claw version of what I wanted. But..... neither turned out so well.

The mouse I am looking forward to is the MiCO when it decides to come back in stock at newegg or amazon.

From people at ESReality and TeamLiquid, the Zowie Mico has an emulated/fake 1600 dpi setting and a nice grip that also fades quickly.
