PSU obsessive-compulsive disorder!

Thread Starter
Shortly after BF3 gets released l, I plan on leaping for a higher-end gpu. To be exact, it'll be the MSI Lightning 580 (TF III). Now most reference 580 cards seem to require a 6 pin rail + 8 pin rail. But this one requires two 8 pin rails. Dunno if I have two of those on my current PSU. Additionally, I kinda want to get a modular PSU anyways.

Bit hesistant on sticking with only 650 Watts, on top of all that, I'll be pushing my next card to maximum OC potential. Also got a bunch of addidtional fans being powered by my current PSU, all directly connected. And down the line, gonna add a dedicated audio interface, for music recording. Sure those require some power too. Was looking maybe a 700 Watts 80 plus, or 650 Watts 80 plus Gold... Opinions please.

650 should be fine and most cards come with molex adapters.

You really don't need to change your PSU as it'll be quite enough for your setup. Fans and that audio thing you mentioned add single digit watt consumptions, you can ignore them.

If he overclocks it won't be, the third 12volt rail (the highest) on that power supply has 25 amps, that card uses about 20 amps for stock clocks, also capacitor aging means that it probably won't power a GTX 580 even at stock after a few years.

Capacitor aging, while I wouldn't quite call it a myth, doesn't affect power output in such a way that it becomes noticeable that fast and that badly. As for the rail thing, modern PSUs have automatic load balancing, so it's not like one rail would be powering both of the video cards power connectors. It's fine.

Keep the PSU, its enough.

He'll probably have something else in a few years, If he's already upgrading from a GTX 560 Ti (which isn't that old either).

Oh right, I forgot about load balancing, his power supply should be fine then.

Forgot to mention that its the 3gb edition. I thought those consume more power?
