120Hz with an EAH6950 DCII/2DI4S/1GD5?

Thread Starter
So after some research, I can't find an answer to my problem so I decided to post a thread.

I can't get my monitor/GPU combo to do 120Hz.

GPU: ASUS EAH6950 DCII/2DI4S/1GD5
Monitor: Viewsonic VX2265wm

I've gotten 120Hz out of the monitor using my old GPU (an MSi HD4850)

I've narrowed down my theories to three:

1) Drivers
2) Mysterious incompatibility in software.
3) The monitor lists a requirement of having a very specific DVI port, DVI-D Dual-Link, which I might not have (the Newegg specs listed Dual-Link, but not D vs. I).

Does anyone else have this issue, perhaps a possible fix, or did I screw myself with this GPU purchase without doing the research?

If your Dual Link DVI connector has four rows of (I think 8) pins without any separation between the pins, such as two columns of four rows...basically a large space or gap between the two sets of pins, then it should be a dual link cable and work.

I know this sounds confusing, so if you don't understand what I stated, let me know and I will re-phrase it.

I found this...the fourth picture is a dvi-d dual link and is what you want:

Funny coincidence^^

I had the same problem , only with the hardware switched:P

My 4850 CFX setup would not allow 120hz for my projector (selectable but did not work),
but after I got the hd6950 DCII cfx setup it works flawlessly.

Using the bundled DVI-HDMI adapter.

Running win7 x64 , ati catalyst 11.6b hotfix drivers.

The monitordriver I use is "generic PNP monitor".

Feel free to ask any questions if you need to compare settings etc,
might help:)

Are you talking about the cable? If so, it's the same cable I used with my old GPU, and it it Dual-Link. To be thorough, I went ahead and checked using this diagram and can confirm that the cable is a Dual-Link DVI-D.

As far as the female ends on my GPU, the Newegg specs says that only one (of 2) of my DVI connectors on the GPU is Dual-Link.

However, they look absolutely identical.

As such, I have tried both, but still cannot get 120Hz to appear as an option in the Windows 7 control panel.

I'm downloading the 11.6 software suite from AMD as we speak.

I had been using the driver suite from ASUS, I'll see if that fixes the issue.

I'm not sure how to check my monitor drivers, though I'm certain that at some point I did install Viewsonic's listed drivers before.

You said 120Hz was a selectable option, that's not true for my system. On mine I cannot even find 120Hz as an option in any menu, using Win7 control panel, or ASUS's repackaged Catalyst Suite.

It might be worth mentioning I'm not using a DVI > HDMI converter. I'm directly using the signal as DVI, with a DVI-D Dual Link cable.

If you right click your desktop background->screen resolution->advanced settings->monitor you can see your monitor type and driver.
You can also see what refresh rates that are available.

With the amd vision engine control center (Bundled with the catalyst driver)
it is even easier.

I do think it is a driver related issue, give us feedback when you have tried the new catalyst drivers:)

So I installed the AMD drivers (11.6) and rebooted, nothing.

I switched DVI ports, which also required rebooting, nothing.

Although when I started rooting around in the catalyst control software I did notice something.

If I go into the Catalyst Control Center and go to My Digital Flat-Panels > Properties (Digital Flat-Panel); it reads out that it detects my monitor model, but then the "Maximum Reported Refresh Rate: 60 Hz".

So is it possibly the monitor driver or firmware reporting 60 Hz as the maximum erroneously?

Also, as a side note, all this rebooting has shown me that I have entirely too many programs that have decided to allow themselves to launch on startup. Skype, Steam, and why the hell does my PRINTER need to have software loaded on startup? Oh well, this issue is far more easily fixed than the other.
