Decent Upgrade for £600

Thread Starter
(Sorry for the same kind of thread, but a £300 budget increase is kind of important methinks)

I'm upgrading most of my hardware in my 3 year old pc - MoBo, GPU, CPU, RAM and PSU - and have a budget of about £650; including WIndows 7 Pro which is only £40 for me because I'm a student

I'm in the UK and I've been told Scan is the best place for parts so that's why I'm buying from there. Also, it's my first real upgrade so I think the Scan Insurance thing is a good idea for me.

This is what I have in my basket so far, and I'm hoping to get it ordered tonight:

CPU-i5-2500k and CM Hyper 212+cooler(good OC'ing i'm told) ~ £182.94
GPU- 1GB MSI TwinFrozr II GTX 560/OC ~ £184.27
MoBo- ASUS P8P67Pro ~ £131.60
RAM- 8GB (4x2) Corsair Vengeance Blue LP ~ £58.99
PSU- 550W XFX Bronze Certified Core Edition ~ £49.91

Comes to £635.54 altogether (Delivery + ScanSure + VAT INC)

Is this a good upgrade and are there any beginner's guides to upgrading computers or are the manuals that come with the components enough?

Change the mobo right away.I know u selected it for low price but that little "-M" tell me that its a micoATX which isn't recommended for games and overlclockers.
For you resolution that would run almost any game at 45+ FPS at ULTRA settings. You should consider a psu upgrade if you want to SLI another GTX 560ti later.
Edit:get the FULL ATX p8p67 pro

Thanks for the info on the motherboard, +rep.

Costs a bit more now, but at least I know it's gonna work properly.

Scan is very good mate for pc hardware, and like you say the 30 day insurance thing they sell is good as it covers you incase you break or damage the items when installing them.

Building a pc for the first time is actually easier than it sounds, i remember doing my first one just over 10 years ago and i found the trick was to compile all the info first before attempting the build and just take your time. If all else fails then your in the right place (OCN) for any advice you may need.

Welcome and good luck bud.

Dave.

How different is a complete build than an upgrade? I presume they're pretty much the same unless cases and fans are hard to install?

Not at all mate, they're easy to fit. Personally when ive upgraded in the past if my case isn't up to my needs ie airflow then i buy new, i always love installing everything new into a new case lol.

If your case currently fits your needs then theres no reason to change it if your on a budget as a decent case of a certain quality is going to be a min of £100 i'd say in the current market.

When you do install everything really do have a think about routing your cables nicely so they're atleast routed nice and tight out of the way to maximise airflow.

Dave.

Just to add, the motherboard user manual does include the basics of installing the main hardware components but it's still best to compile a list of things to do and how to do them, just do the research before starting.........Also, does the above price included free delivery or is there a delivery charge ????.
