Is this too much tim?

Thread Starter
Im going to be resetting my heatsink again and wanted to see if what u see is too much tim. Iv looked at ur site and see that im supose to use the pea size method which I will prob use. Anyway was this too much tim?

Yes, that's too much.
All you want the TIM to do is fill those microgaps between the CPU and the heatsink. Any more than is required to do that is too much.

See how it poured out the sides? Too much.

If it spills out after clamping down and getting the TIM warm, you put too much.

I would say so. When you apply the TIM it should be about the size of a grain of rice directly in the middle of the CPU IHS. After installing the heatsink the TIM should spread out in a circle around the IHS but not come out of the sides of where the heatsink base and CPU IHS make contact.

yup.. too much TIM their buddy!! lol try applying a small amount about the size of an uncooked grain of rice right in the middle. Too much TIM is just as bad as not enough as far as heat transfer goes

Agreed, way too much. As others have said, the size of uncooked grain of rice is generally the excepted way to do it.

It looks like you have a heatsink with direct contact pipes. It's possible that the grain-size method might not be quite enough depending on any gaps between the pipes and the rest of the heatsink plate. You might need to experiment with that a little bit.

Either way that's still too much in the photos.

maybe with such a heatsink its a good idea to apply some to the heatsink and scrap it off with a credit card so the gaps are filled. and then use the grain of rise method?

EDIT: like this but in micro size
