VM Keeps resetting

Hi everyone! First Post on OCN, have done much reading here but this is my first registered entry.

I have a problem where, after I disable my pagefile, windows 7 pro sp1 x64 keeps reinstating it upon reboot. This wouldn't be such a bad problem if it weren't setting it to over 16gb, which is my memory capacity. Here are some screenies to show my problem:

This is what shows when I first start up.
pagefileprob1.png

Then here's what's happening when I go to examine it:
pagefileprob2.png

As you can see, windows won't let me have no pagefile on my primary drive, even with a system managed or custom size file on my other HDD's. Going from where the second shot leaves me, and I click on "Change" in the leftmost box, and set the size to "no page file" (which it already is checked), the system behaves the same way every time, telling me not to do that, there's danger if the pagefile is less than 800mb, would you like to restart, etc. I really don't want a pagefile on my SSD, but there you go. How do I fix this? Thanks for any attention!

Try applying the pagefile changes while in safe mode.

Thanks for the tip, will try it as soon as I get back home for the day.

BTW, I have Prefetch and Superfetch both set to 0, and indexing disabled on the SSD (C: drive), as well as disabling the hibernation file. Idk if this makes any difference.

Alright, done.
Safe Mode had no effect. The pagefile was reset in the same manner upon reboot, both when rebooting into safemode, and rebooting into normal startup.

That's exactly where he was via his screenshots, it doesn't seem to apply.

Have you tried resetting it to like 2 GB and see if that applies properly? If it does, then set it to nothing again? Mine is setup with a 2 GB one on my secondary storage drive, with none on my SSD and it seems to work ok.

From what I remember, Win 7 is always going to setup some kind of page file, or virtual memory. So, best bet is to set a pre-set amount on your SSD. For instance mine is 1024 - 1024. So its always the same amount. Then I have another 6g allocated on my data drive setup.

I will research more though tonight.

Have found the definitive answer yet, but for a temp solution. Turn VM off on the SSD and assign something like 512mb - 512mb on your data raid. Restart and see if it still wants to set a certain amount.

Thanks bllarkin and Rebelord, here's what I got.
If I set my page file on the SSD to 1GB, then there is no problem. Windows restarts normally without resetting the VM. That was how it was set since I built it a month ago, but I don't want any VM on my SSD, for various reasons. Now about the raid, regardless of whether it is system-managed vm, or a specific amount like 2gb or 20gb, windows will always reinstate vm on the ssd upon restart; completely ignoring the vm on the raid volume. I've tried several different quantities from system-managed to 4gb etc, same effect. Safe mode didn't work either frown.gif

Edit: It's gotten to where the system completely ignores any VM I assign to my B: drive, even going so far as to delete the pagefile on it if I try to disable the VM on my ssd (C:). Through some trial and error, I have been able to reduce the size of VM on my SSD to 100mb initial, 200mb max - without windows resetting it upon reboot. I have left VM disabled on the B: drive. I'll have to be satisfied with that, if I can't find a fix somewhere.

Check the Win 7 SSD Tricks and Tweaks thread, in the HDD / SSD section. Theres a lot of talk about page file.

What about setting it to be something like 20mb - 20mb only on the SSD then whatever on the raid? Still resets the SSD page to higher?
This may require a RegEdit to possibly turn off switchs to do what you want.

Alright, I read through the SSD tweak thread there by magic-man, but even he says that pagefile probably should be left on the ssd. Also, he doesn't really provide any more detailed info than I already found from ocn or google.
I think I might try a Ramdisk setup since I have 16gb of ram, and put the pagefile on that....except that I've heard that since the ramdisk process starts *after* system processes, my VM will probably still be reset... I'll try your latest tip, and failing that, ramdisk, and report back. Thx.

Edit: It does not reset when set to 20mb-20mb. I have also set up a pagefile on the B: drive of 2048-25000mb. I just hope the system actually uses that. Anyway I'm satisfied with this result, thanks for all the helps ppl!
