GPU heatsink screw hole stripped.

Thread Starter
Its in one of the worst places. Its one of the screws witch pushes the GPU to the heatsink. The temps are fine for now but i am sure over time the heatsink will start to fall away from the GPU. Is their any way to fix this? Its not the screw, I have tried different screws, its the hole.

I am hoping that their is some kind of glue that will be strong enough, so that I can screw the screw in it to make new threads.

Maybe you could Tap the hole to a bigger size with the proper tools and use the proper screw that matches the tread.

Maybe I should use some canned cement, or hard grout to fill the hole and re screw it in.I have small screws but GPU screws are VERY small. The hole on the graphics card is small as well. I do not want to put any thing larger in it because I could end up crack the silicone.

Any one have any ideas on a adhesive I could put in the whole to make new threads?

I do know of a sure way to fix this. Take some stranded copper wire and feed it into the hole. Place the screw into the hole with the copper wire sticking out. This will take a little force, Now drive the screw int the hole. The copper wire will force pressure to the surrounding material, and cut new threads.

I'm speaking from experience, If you don't want to drill and re tap, this is what to do.

Thanks +1 rep, But I could use some more details. How thick should the wire be? I have some thick speaker wire copper and I have some thin copper wire.

Well being as it is a gpu screw, i would use which ever wire has thinner strands. 3 or 4 individual strands twisted together should do it. since you need the heatsink to make good contact and pressure, mount the heatsink using the good screw holes first. Then feed the wire through the PCB, and into the screw hole. leave the excess wire ( a few inches) sticking out. Fold it down flat onto the pcb. This will assure you will force the screw next to the wire, not on top, smashing it. Once you have driven the screw in, cut the left overs off.

Thanks a ton. It worked out. Thew screw is in their is some presser but not as much as I would like.

For any one having the same problem. Just take 4 pieces of quality copper speaker wire rap to pieces together and do the same with the other 2 so that you end up with 2 pieces of wire. Put one piece of wire in the right of the hole and another one on the left side of the hole so that they are opposite then twist the screw with some presser.

Yeah that would work for sure (the copper).

I do this with toothpicks in drywall, but copper is soft, and a thin piece would work great.
