same ram different voltages?

Thread Starter
I purchased 2x2 ddr3 1600 7-7-7-20 @ 1.9 volts and a year later I bought the exact same serial number ram but it is 2x2 ddr3 1600 7-7-7-20 @ 1.8 volts. My pc wont boot with both sets in at either of the said voltages. I called Patriot and they told me I had to run them at 9-9-9-24 @ 1.65 volts to use all 8 gigs.... Should I just run 4 gigs at 7-7-7-20 or use all 8 at the slower speed?

With Sandy Bridge, exceeding 1.65V is not recommended at all. It is to protect the CPU.

So you need to get a kit that is rated for 1.65V or lower. The preferred voltage is 1.5.

I got a question... If you buy 1600mhz 1.65v ram, wont it be set to 1.5v 1333mhz automaticly with sandy bridge?

I don't know. However if this is true, then that would be another possible explanation for why this memory is not working.

Edit: 1.65V memory will work as long as the VCCIO Voltage and DRAM Voltage are never more than 0.5V apart from each other. So that means the VCCIO Voltage would have to be no less than 1.15000V with a DRAM Voltage of 1.65V. In other words, if the Auto setting for VCCIO doesn't get the voltage up to at least 1.15000V, then it should be set manually.

The default VCCIO voltage is 1.0000V, so that's one reason why 1.50V is the recommended DRAM voltage (because they are not any further apart than 0.5V).
