Can't connect through RDP?

Thread Starter
So here's my stupid issue:

My girlfriend is running Windows 7 Home Premium. From what I understand, I can't connect to that version of Windows, though she can connect to me. I set everything up and had her connect to my computer through RDP using my actual computer name and log on name and it worked. I never tried to access her computer since I knew it wouldn't work.

I also went on my Dad's laptop, which is also on the wireless network (as my girlfriends laptop was) and connected remotely to my computer using the same steps as mentioned before. I even connected remotely using my internal IP address (not sure what the technical term for it is) (192.168.1.5) and it connected fine.

What makes me angry is that I can't connect to anything. I attempted to connect to my Dad's laptop by both using his computer/log on name as well as the internal and external IP address to no avail. The message I receive is:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote access to the server is not enabled - obviously not the reason since he can connect fine to me.
2) The remote computer is turned off - trust me, it's on.
3) The remote computer is not available on the network - also not true as I can see the computer itself in the network and sharing center, enter the username and password, and check out his desktop.

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled. - I enabled it through My Computer's System Protection Remote settings by enabling access to the computer as well as allowing ALL network connections to connect (less secure). Basically the same settings as my computer (at least from what it looks like) but he can connect to me and I can't connect to him.

For those wondering, my reason for remote desktop is to run a program on his computer that I don't want to install on my own system. We are both running Windows 7 Ultimate (I am 64-bit, he is 32).

Does anyone have a clue what I can do here? I ONLY want to connect using RDP, as I should be able to.

Any help please?

What OS if your dad using? if it is Pro edition then goto his machine... right click computer --> properties--> Remote settings--> Select Allow Connection from Computers running any version of Remote Desktop

NM just saw you did that...

Did you check to see if its is allowed through his firewall?

If I read your post right, you are trying to connect to a Win7 Home Premium machine via RDP, right? If so, there's a hack you can install that allows this here: http://andrewblock.net/2010/02/23/en...mium-64-32-bit.

Note that it replaces a couple of RDP-related DLLs on the target machine.

Cheers.

EDIT: I know you said you want to use RDP, but VNC works well and it's free http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1.

I think he is talking about connecting to his dads Win7 Ultimate but that hack works... is also enables multiple concurrent connections so you don't log another user off

I appreciate the input but I would like to stick with RDP as my reasoning for using it is because I don't want to install anything on this computer.

Also, I do not want to connect to a Home Premium PC. Sorry if I was unclear. I just wanted to mention that a Home Premium PC could connect to ME, and that I am trying to connect to my Dad's laptop, which is running Ultimate.

I will check this, but I assume his firewall would be the same as mine since we are technically on a LAN (he's on the wireless while I'm directly connected).

I would also like to mention we are using FiOS, if that has any bearing on this.

Might I also mention that I can ping perfectly fine from my Dad's laptop to my computer's internal IP (can someone tell me what this is actually called?) which is 192.168.1.5.

*It still doesn't make sense to me how he can connect to me and I can't to him.*

Im talking about the windows firewall...

Can you ping him? if you can't Its either blocked by firewall... or possibly his antivirus (if any?)

Try pinging him, then if it fails, disable his firewall, then try again, if that fails disable his antivirus. Dont leave them that way of course... just for testing... then we can go from there.

Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding on Ultimate. I agree firewall is a likely candidate, maybe try disabling firewall altogether rather than adding exception just to rule it out. If that works then turn back on and add exception.

Usually called private IP.

It's good to know that you can ping him, but it's probably the RDP port that's blocked (or possibly even the RD protocol).

DOH, my sugar must be low ... 2 mis-reads in one thread! It looks like you've got this covered anyway, Pappa.

One last thought, he could run a netstat -a -n on the target machine and see if RDP port 3389 is even listening.
