Thanks Joe.

Trust me, it was worth it. The more I learn, the better, especially since I am trying to get certified and I suck at tests. :x

By the way, remember the whole "stubborn" thing we talked about? I want to figure out the 3389 now. Poop!

But thanks so much for everything!

My pleasure.

Hey what certification are you going for? I got Sec+ last year, though haven't used it much so far since I've been on sabbatical most of this year.

Oh, and everyone is stubborn about something. I haven't met anyone yet (even Buddhist monks) with 100% equanimity.

Well I kinda screwed up my life and got a business degree when in reality I definitely should have gotten a computer science or IT degree. It's been VERY difficult to find a job in IT, but right now I'm working at a company as sorta the "tech" guy doing what seems to be tier 1 and 2 technical work while also dealing with the basics of the network, server (VMWare, SQL, etc).

Right now I'm simply going for the A+, if I can even pass that. I've been around computers my whole life but let's be honest, I never cared about dot-matrix printers or Windows 2000.

Then I will be going for Network+, Security+ and probably move into Microsoft and Cisco certifications immediately following. I'm hoping to network a bit and get a few references/connections that may have openings so I can broaden my possibilities once I get certified. Like my essay? Haha

Sounds good. I've been plugged into this stuff for about 20 years professionally. There is so much money to be made, it's ridonkulous. The only problem for me has been burn out. That's why I've taken most of this year off ... to avoid a nervous breakdown from all of the coding "death marches".

It sounds like you've got a good path in mind. The two A+ tests are pretty easy, so you should breeze right through those. Net+ and Sec+ are a bit more challenging, but also a lot more interesting IMO. Especially Net+ ... you'll learn more about the TCP header and payload then you can imagine LOL.

Anyway best of luck. Depending on which way you decide to specialize will highly determine your "master" certification path. So if you're going to stay in NETADMIN/SYSADMIN Cisco has a pretty clear path to take. Whereas if you get interested in DBA you will probably end up on the Oracle or Microsoft slope. Or maybe you can go completely to the darkside and become a developer. That's where the real money is, but like I said also the real headaches!

Yeah, just to be on the safe side I'm thinking about purchasing the Boson ExSim-Max exams as they give you your money back if you fail the first time. Pretty nifty.

But thanks Joe. Thanks a lot.

To keep this thread clean, do you mind if I hold onto your e-mail address and shoot you a message later today about life and virtues? (Obviously kidding, but I'd like to keep in touch).

I have a few career path questions for you if you wouldn't mind, but I promise I won't take up days of your life like with this thread, haha.

Cheers to all who have helped! Thanks a lot!

Sure, e-mail away. I like to try to give back to the community that has given me so much whenever I get a chance.
