Good soundcard? - Page 2

In that case I don't think the Xonar DX will work because it doesn't have any optical ports which leaves you with the HT Omega Claro Plus+ or the HT Omega Striker. Although you should be happy with any high quality sound card as long as it has optical ports, personally I would steer away from Creative products though.

Let me know how you like it paired with your a40's as I'm still doing research on different headsets for gaming and any information would be helpful to my final decision.

You know if you are using optical all the audio is decoded on your device and not your soundcard. Thus, buying a really expensive soundcard is useless...might as well get a cheap one that supports DD Live, but then again I guess the Striker is cheap already.

My goal is to run a 5.1 or 7.1 system through the analog on the sound card for music and movies and then use the optical for my headset when gaming or when I don't want to wake anyone, I thought the HT Omega Claro Plus+ would be my best option because of all the features. Along with that I need a sound card that would offer a form of speaker fill to push a stereo source like music from itunes through the 5.1/7.1 setup which my current on-board card cant do. Do you think I should be looking at a cheaper card Aznboy1993?

The example given though was concerning an oldish P43 motherboard with VIA onboard sound. Before spending $75 of his build budget on a sound card he may or may not need he should check rather or not the Realtek chip on the Asus P67 board he's looking at purchasing is capable of Dolby Digital on the optical out.

Also does the Mixamp require Dolby or will DTS be sufficient ? I think some can do both and some cheaped out and only licensed DTS.

Just trying to help.

If this is his motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131771 it uses a Realtek ALC892 which according realtek's site supports "Optional Dolby PCEE program, SRS TruSurround HD, SRS Premium Sound, Fortemedia SAM, Creative Host Audio, Synopsys Sonic Focus, DTS Surround Sensation | UltraPC, and DTS Connect licenses" although I don't know what all the "Optional Dolby PCEE program" entails.

http://forums.astrogaming.com/showth...nd-Selections- I just found this post on astro's forums listing multiple sound cards that will and will not work with the a40s, also even with the Mixamp "The sound card will need to support Dolby Digital Live for you to receive any sound other than pre-recorded Dolby Digital 5.1 from Blu-rays and DVD's" according to the poster.

If that is your case then no. I do not recommend getting a cheaper sound card. However, if you are solely using your sound card to pass the signal to a decoder on a receiver or DAC then yes any sound card that can do DD Live or DTS Live will suffice. But, with analog the digital to analog conversion is done by the DAC on your sound card, so having a better one does make quite a difference. Also on a side note, I would not recommend listening to music in surround (be it 5.1 or 7.1). The artists recorded the songs intentionally to be listened in stereo. The virtualizers on a lot of receivers are lacking and make the music sound "unnatural" but that is just my opinion.
