for me it was justified because paying $10/month is less than buying my phone off contract
also I didn't want to pay $350 upfront for my phone x2 since i got 1 for my wife too
So let's say you want an atrix. it's $530 on newegg $600 on amazon off contract
do you want to pay $530-$600 up front do you want to pay that over the course of 2 years?
It's $360 for 2 years of data plan and $150 for the phone with an upgrade
I would try to sweet talk them and see if they'll let you have the phone for the new contract price of $25 which i doubt since that's an amazon special
But no matter how I look at it you end spending about the same with or without contract
At least with contract you pay that much over the course of 2 years

My data plan is terrible, but it's pretty easy to conserve bandwidth on the cheapest one without any painful abstinence. Just don't watch videos, don't tether (like most providers would let you without paying, ha), and keep browsing somewhat light. Download/update apps on wifi. I rarely pass 50MB on my 200MB "plan" and I'm on this forum all the time.

Thanks for the comments.

I understand its just creating a need for it. But im having a lot of trouble trying to find a phone that DOESNT REQUIRE A DAMNED DATA PLAN and are similar to lets say, an android. Not like very similar but can play Music, Video's, and can have games put on it if neccessary. The games part isnt that big of a deal but would be nice to have, you know like those games you get off through apps.

I'll most likely just try to find one of those cheap phones and use the mediocre video and sound quality it has.

I understand your situation, but getting a featurephone isn't gonna cut it these days. Actually, some of the good ones (Nokia's NSeries phones come to mind) are expensive to get off-contract and you won't take advantage of web connectivity options such devices offer you. Unless though, you'll settle for a RAZR or something.

you could always just buy a cheap phone and then carry around a tablet. the nook is awesome once rooted and would give you all the fun stuff of android without costing you for a data plan.

i know thats not exactly what you are wanting but it would work

another option that i am not sure i can really talk about much would be to change the ESN of an android phone to that of your old regular phone and use it with your carrier. they would not know its a smartphone and would give you a basic package but you get all the cool stuff just without internet. mods feel free to delete this post if it is against the rules.

Check the marketplace. There are a bunch of used smartphones for a reasonable price.
