Nikon D5000 a good deal at $579?

Thread Starter
I'm considering my first DSLR and this seems to be a pretty good camera. The D5000 is currently 579 at BestBuy, seems to be the cheapest new body+lens that I found. What do you guys think considering I'm new to this genre of cameras, is it a good deal and a solid camera for a beginner? What would you guys suggest?

Get the D3100 for $599. Unless you really want the flippy screen. The D3100 has a newer sensor.

d5000 outperforms the d3100 in terms of picture quality and iso performance b/c it uses the same sensor as the d90 and d300s

i compared with a friends d3100

also the d3100 is a bit smaller than the d5k as well (depends if u have big or small hands..)

if you dont mind used, you can get a semi used d5k for quite the lower price and you can pick a different lens to get instead of a kitted 18-55

i see a low mileage d5k for $350.. bundled with a 35mm f/1.8 $525.. good deal..

or d5k + 18-55 + 55-200 and a buncha other ... stuff $575

It's for 559$ at NewEgg

And the D3000 is supposed to be a starter's camera, so this is way better. smile.gif

Ahh I was going through this debate a few months back...

I purchased my D5000 refurbished for $499 a month ago from Adorama and it showed up in Brand New condition.

Works perfectly and I could not be happier!

I would not buy a D5000 new anymore. Refurbished, yes, but brand new I don't think it's worth it.
