Raid newbie question

Thread Starter
I just purchased a drive nearly identical to the one I have (both are Seagate, same size, SATA, but one is 3GB/s vs the other being 3gb/s. My question is if I want to set these drives up in Raid 0 for performance, but don't have a 3rd drive to store the data in the meantime, could I clone the data to the other drive and then set them up in raid?

you can clone them but before doing anything back up everything

Well, if you clone the info to the other drive and then try to Raid 0 it, you will have to reformat both drives whole, OS, Everything, to be able to RAID it. So basicly you will have to find another source to back your data up. Think about getting online storage or an external hard drive. or just try to get another cheaper Internal.

About the 3gb/s you were talking about etc, That is Sata II. You will have to do a Sata II RAID or it might not work. But Im not sure sense I dont really know exactly what hard drive you got.

i think you can, but since your cloning, why wont u use RAID 1, to mirror the drives?.. that's a more secure RAID system

Raid 1 is for security purposes, people who want there important Data secured, stuff they can't get back. Raid 0 is for performance, get the most speed out of your computer.

By cloning Im pretty sure he meant put the data on the new drive he bought and then RAID 0 it. Thats not really possible, sense you have to completely wipe out the whole drive before being able to RAID it at all. He has to have another source to store his other data in. Preferably an External hard drive, not internal.

Correct. It hadn't dawned on me that I would need to format both drives as 1.
