Need Help Figuring Out What's Wrong

ok before i begin this is not my system its a friends who asked me to look at it

the system is a dell inspirion 518 desktop intel core 2 duo 4gb ddr2 ram

the problem that they said is they went to turn it on one day and the light went yellow on it, upon getting this system i hooked it up proceeded to turn it on and it would start up,no post then shutdown and start backup but never making it to post.

there is a light on the motherboard that is amber in color. i checked all the caps they are good, i then proceeded to disconnect the hard drive tried to boot still no post nothing, then i removed the dvd rom still no post nothing, next i proceeded to change the ram to the other dimm slots still no post, i then proceeded to try 1 ram stick only still no post. at this point im like this is why i dislike dells.

my next step was i changed out the ram for different ram that i knew was good, still no post, then i decided maybe the onboard video is not working so i put my own video card in there which i knew worked still nothing. next i tried swapping out the power supply for a working one i had and repeated everything, still no post. at this point im at a lost only to suspect the motherboard itself is gone.

before i order a new board i wanted to try and get some input from others if they think the same or not.

all the caps on the board are good, the fan headers are giving power to the system fans,

sounds like you've covered everything except the mobo. They go all the time in off the shelf models and Dell uses terrible components on their boards

**update** i pulled the hard drive and did some diagnostics on it using western digitals diagnostic tools and seatools by connecting it to my rig, every test came back fail. even when i tried to copy over a test folder of 100 jpeg pics that should take 1-2 seconds it couldnt complete it it kept getting stuck and sit there for 30mins

i informed them of the conclusion that the board, hard drive are dead, i also tested the ram and found a dead stick, so i got pricing together told them in parts alone is $110 from newegg + my cost of 65 for a total of 175 they nearly lost it..

i told them i have another solution which was to pick them up a used pc with 2gb ddr2, 160gb hard drive, same processor for 125 which breaks down to 75 for the pc,+50 for me to go over it good and get them all set up and they still lost it.

at this point i put the whole system back together awaiting what they want to do, im fed up with it. especially when i told them i was giving them a fair price considering everyplace else would charge them 70-150 to just look at it, and double charge the cost of the parts plus their labor. they are upset cause they paid over 1,000 for this machine but didnt buy an extended warranty and thought their system was king

I wouldn't worry about it too much, some people just don't understand electronics and just because you spend 1000 on an OEM pc doesn't mean you are getting a good computer.
