Playing with bots on CS Source was fun until you realize it's too easy or too hard. They're great for target practice if they're on easy but they're impossible to kill when they're hard.

My most fav game, is when I see an online match, ie Half life 2 series of CSS, DOD-S, etc, where there's alot of these 5ms "players" that are bots, some decent, some noob, a fair mix... and I just join in and auto boot one of these "bots", and get to enjoy a game while waiting for more online players to mix it up. And I legitimately get more points/experience/achieve's, as I get to still play online, regardless if ppl there or not.

I can see the attraction to co-op vs bots but Im struggling to see why the majority of people would want to play online vs bots.

Sure, bots wont rage-quit or carry on like a 3 year old but thats all part of the MP scene.

I dont know... Im struggling with the concept.

For example, take GRID (racing game). The multiplayer was actually recently shut down. But anyway, my brother (friend/doesn't matter) and I just want to play as a racing team vs. some bots. We can play LAN, but if we play together, it'll just be two cars on the track. There is no way to fill up the grid with AI cars, which are honestly not bad at the game. Isn't racing with 16 cars a whole lot more fun than racing with just two? No other friends have the game, so it's just us two, or the singleplayer modes.

Gotcha, thanks for that, makes it clearer.

That seems like it would be a niche in a larger market. These days MP is one of the biggest criteria games are judged on. I would have thought that a developer would be throwing a good chunk of their budget at the MP aspect, not at AI bots.

Yes, there is AI within the single player but they are usually heavily scripted without much wriggle room. I cant see that translating to a good bot opponent, online.

I see what your saying but I cant see it happening on a large scale, anytime soon.

In this day in age people rather play online with other people so the devs don't bother anymore.

You can download mods to play the 64 player maps in BF2 with bots.

I'm pretty sure he meant that there is just not enough demand for developers to include it, although it would be a nice feature to have because I was without internet for almost a week a while back and I thought the same thing then too.

Which I did. I just don't understand why that wasn't built in in the first place, and people had to put in effort to mod it in. Is the LAN community just not as vocal as the MP community?

Just thought I'd make a tardy contribution to an important topic. I concur with the OP re. the option for bots in multiplayer- it makes the games more versatile and increases their longevity (i.e., when the online component inevitably dies). And in the end, it's the OPTION that should be provided, so those that want to avail the functionality, can. If you just wanna "pwn n00bs" in lagline spaz fests, fine. But that shouldn't mean those who'd rather have a more intimate MP experience should be shunned. Not to mention those that don't buy on launch day when there are actually players to play with. Racing games in particular are a no-brainer for bots in multiplayer- who wants to race around tracks with only a couple opponents?? lol!

Recently a racing game called Fireburst (Motorstorm-like knock-off with comical driver personalities) was advertised as having bot racers in its split-screen modes (2/4 players + 10/6 bots). Yet, when the game was released, it had no such option. Upon liaising the developers, they told me that they were going to include bot racers but removed the option at the last minute due to focus group feedback that indicated MP was preferable without bots. Now, that might be the preferred way to play, with human opponents, but to omit the option for bots entirely was an asinine decision. What's the game worth once the community dies? Nothing. Not that there was ever a community for this particular game to begin with; making the omission of bot racers utter drain bamaged. Their response did state that they would consider reinstating the bot racers with a patch. But as implied, the game was DoA, so the game was abandoned and no such patch was ever forthcoming. Result: wasted development time.

If I had a Zimbabwean dollar for ever game forum of a title that lacks anything but online MP that's spammed with "Looking for multiplayer partners" posts, I'd be able to open my own development studio dedicated to modding in MP bots in every game that lacks them! So don't tell me the functionality isn't a desired one. Just because 'most' plebes play WoW and CoD doesn't mean everyone does.

Some games that do have bots in their dedicated multiplayer modes:
• Company of Heroes series (LAN)
• LotR: Battle for Middle-Earth series (LAN)
• Kane and Lynch series (LAN)
• Bang Bang Racing (split-screen)
• Blades of Time (LAN)
• Awesomenauts (split-screen, LAN, online)
• Demigod (LAN)
• Split/Second (split-screen, LAN)
• Blur (split-screen, LAN)
