forcing higher than recommended LCD refresh rate.

As you may or may not know, with nVidia's control panel, you have the ability to force whatever refresh rate you want, provided your display supports it.

Now for instance, My netbook's LCD is locked to 60hz normally, however with creating a custom resolution with NV's control panel, I can get it up to 62hz (any higher and the display gets all distorted)

So with that being said, are LCD panel displays able to run slightly higher refresh rates than they are advertised?

I again tested this on my 23'' Samsung 1080p monitor on my desktop and was able to get to 62hz as well from a stock 59hz.

Am I actually seeing the extra 2hz or are they just being wasted, and should I go back to 60hz?

Not that it really matters with a mere 2hz.


My guess is that they are most likely wasted. If you want to make sure, try to find an option to see the display mode on your screen. Something that displays the resolution and refresh rate. If it says 62hz, it is.


Commonly if you manage to actually force a refresh rate above the factory specs on an LCD, I don't recommend using it. Most of the forced refresh rates (not all) I've seen decrease pixel responsiveness at least somewhat, making response times slower, and thus having more ghosting, and making it worse than the original settings.

This isn't to say that all high response times cause this however. LCD screens usually come in 60hz, 75hz, and 120hz standards. If the factory spec supports it, increasing refresh rates will only yeld positive results.
