HD6950 users... plz help me out - i m confused with my purchase

Hi ,
After reading comments and reviews of reference and non-ref cards from Sapphire, MSI and Asus I m in complete Confusion.

I cant make the decision to buy which card of which brand.

I m stuck between with below cards :
1) Sapphire 6950 2GB ref-model
2) Sapphire 6950 2GB Dirt3 edition
3) MSI 6950 2GB twin frozr 3
4) MSI 6950 ref-model (red PCB)
5) Asus EAH6950 DCII/2DI4S/2GD5 ( doesnt have dual bios )

Now, AFIAK the ref models have a more chance to get unlocked than non-ref models which also have a dual bios switch. But then no 1 can guarantee that the ref model has 100% chance to get unlocked , can ny1 here?

So the obvious question arises in my mind that : if i buy a ref model (old stock) and then i find that i can't unlock it then how far can i push the ref-cards after OCing them.

Now, with non-ref cards like the twin frozr 3 even if they can't be unlocked they come OCed right out the box and hence performs nearly same as normal 6970.

So , leaving the unlocking thingy aside... I want to know that which card can pushed to max limit after OCing : the non-refs or refs ?

My best bet is Twin Frozr 3... what do you guyz suggest ?

PS: Do all ref models of MSI 6950 2GB have a RED PCB or only some?

-Regards ,
Umang G.

MSi for cooler. I wish they had a lightning version of the 6950. XFX is good too. Sapphire if you want Dirt 3 free.

Try to find a Gigabyte HD 6950, that is a guaranteed reference card that can get shader unlocked.

Those are hard to find. Newegg only sells the one with the non-ref design. Even when I was at akihabara, they didn't have it.

yeah i fear.... but nyways ill be upgrading to corei7 soon... also
many ppl are saying that twin frozr II unlocks with high probability even if it doesnt have a switch when compared to twin frozr III.

Also i have learnd that ... even if a given hd6950 2GB doesnt have a bios switch like twin frozr 2 ... it can be recovered (after the card stops working due to failed unlocking) using other gfx card and flashing the original bios again but for this you need 2 PIC-E slots...

Can some shed more light on it ?

Also which of ASUS EAH6950 DCII 2GB and MSI twin frozr III overclocks better ?

@wolzen : did you overclock you asus dcII 6950 2GB over 850Mhz ? And will that card fit in my cooler master CM690 cabinet ?

i haven't overclocked it yet because i just finished building my sandybridge rig about 3 hours ago and my q6600 was bottlenecking my asus eah6950 2gb DCII. I was only playing "rift" though

it seems to be around 11.5 inches long.
