attempting to unlock 840t

Thread Starter
Hi, pretty new to overclocking... overclocked a p4 3.2ghz once but was careless and ran into a lot of problems and after a year or so, failure. I'd like to do it good this time.
what I'm attempting to build and overclock
cpu: amd phenom 2 x4 840t (unlock to six cores and overclock)
motherboard: Asrock 880G extreme 3
memory: 3x2gb ddr3 1333
gfx card: XFX Radeon HD 5670 1GB 128-bit DDR5 (in Hybrid CrossfireX configuration w/ MB integrated gfx radeon hd4250)
drives: 1tb SATA 3gb/s 7200rpm
DVD-RW

the motherboard has features that I can't use yet, like sata3 and 16gb max ram, because I'm on a budget, and am using some parts from another computer.
the 840t processor is a rare cpu, it only comes in some hp's and gateways I think which can't be unlocked or overclocked... taking it out of an hp I bought.

A few problems I see here...

1) Unlocks aren't guaranteed.
2) That board should handle a 6 core fine, if it does unlock, so no issues there. It's an 8+2 phase, and decent.
3) Use only 2 sticks of that memory. Running 3 sticks will hurt performance. If you want more than 4GB of RAM, then buy a 2x4GB set, they're stupid cheap right now.
4) Your GPU won't Crossfire with the onboard. You need a HD4370 or HD4350 to use CFX with the onboard. Not that it mattes, since your HD5670 is considerably faster than the onboard anyway.

So, even though the motherboard says it has Hybrid CrossfireX technology, it will only work together with certain cards?

If I filled all four mem slots it would be fine right? Should I use different memory in 2 slots, I notice some people doing that with their systems... not sure if there is a performance reason.

Being that its an AMD setup, you should try to stick with only 2 sticks. You'll lose speed by going with 4 sticks. Your CPU supports DDR3-1333 natively with 2 sticks, and DDR3-1066 natively with 4 (obviously can go higher with an overclock though).

And you definitely don't want to mix / match RAM sticks if you can avoid it. The only time that people usually do that (at least around here), is when they're on an extremely tight budget or just don't care. You will always be limited by the weaker link.

The reason to avoid 3 sticks though is because of dual channel. With 3 sticks, you'll be in single channel, and because you're over 2 sticks...it's harder on the memory controller.

I believe I read it somewhere on AMD's website a while back. The HD5450 MIGHT be supported. It was only the lowest of the low end cards that worked, I know that for sure.

But honestly, you're much better off without it anyway. Most of the time, its not any better than the extra card is on its own anyway. And you've already picked a card that's 100x stronger than onboard as is.

Yeah hybrid crossfireX is not worth it. If you can try and get the HD 5770 or 6770. It's one of the best budget graphics cards.

I suggest you read some of the overclocking and unlocking guides on this site (including how to make sure your unlock is stable).

I have a 970T myself that unlocked to 6 cores smile.gif.

Most motherboards have features people don't use, don't worry about it. Just because a motherboard has a limit of 16gb RAM doesn't mean you have to use 16gb. Same applies to SATAIII, USB 3.0 and etc. 4gb is more than enough ram unless you are using your computer for a specific job, in which case you will know how much ram you need.

Note that if your CPU is a C3 and not a C2, you should be able to run four sticks at their rated speed (but maybe not timings). But it's a locked thuban anyway, should handle them just fine...

I have used that board but not the unlock function. I've fiddled with it. Keep in mind you won't be able to see core temps, just overall CPU temp. At least it did that for me.
