6970 Shaman or Watercooling?

Thread Starter
I'm debating on getting a Shaman to cool my card or start watercooling. Haven't watercooled anything before. As of now my Ambient temps are about 36°C. That or 50°C. I'm not real sure.. looking at AMD OverDrive Utility. My GPU runs idle about 65°-70°C. And much hotter under load. Have to up the fan speed to 50-70% depending on game and temp. Everyone says 65-70°C is ok at idle for these cards, I just don't like it.

Shaman or Watercooling? If watercooling could you suggest a few things that I would need.

an Arctic Cooling AXP-II should do the trick on a reference card, I used to have those worries with my unlocked 6950 ref...but now that I have the AXP-II i'm pretty much set for the rest of this GPU's life.

Maybe try out the shaman first then go WC with CPU and GPU...just my opinion.

FYI I really doubt your ambient temps are 50C, as that is 122F. For watercooling you will probably want a 240 rad (HWlabs GTX if you want to use high speed fans, XSPC RX if you want low speed fans), a pump (swiftech 35X is my favorite), any reservoir you like, tubing, clamps, and a GPU block. If you have a ref card finding a GPU block shouldn't be a problem. See here for a watercooling faq.

wow, your temps are high. The thing about water cooling is that you can reduce noise while efficiently cooling several main components in the computer. For example, if you are just cooling your GPU, then I might would go with the shaman. If you are looking to cool your CPU and are planning to eventually upgrade and go crossfire, then look no further than water. Make sure and get components that leave you room for growth, but you'll definitely get much better temps from either.

ur cards seriously idle @70c? I think a RMA is your first step, not alternative cooling. my 6950 @935/1440 1.175v never breaks 70c gaming with 70%fan. Most aftermarktet coolers arent going to shave tons of degrees off ur card. If you dont like it hittting the 70's, a shaman will put it in the 60's which is good in most peoples eyes, maybe not urs. If you have the budget to do so, get a loop going

Yea I know the ambient can't be right. I'm just going by this AMD OverDrive utiility and it was the only thing that was in there. Don't really have anything to find out my true ambient temp.

Thank you for the list of components.. it will at the very least get me started in the right direection.

I'm really just concerned with my GPU temps. I don't feel that they should be that high.

Yea right now the card is idle at 66° with the fan on 32% speed. I did a test on it with Crysis 2 and it shot up to 90°C without increasing fan speed.. just factory. inside my case doesn't feel too hot.. I've got the air flowing right.. the CPU is fine. aftermarket Heat Sink.

For ambient just buy a thermometer for your room, or are you refering to temps inside your case?

On the subject of your case i don't know anything about it, whats airflow like in it? How many case fans are on it?

Just googled your case, airflow should be good. Those two big 140mm fans pulling air in, though it seems only one 120mm exhaust seems odd.

Maybe you could take your Stock HSF off give it all a clean and re-apply thermal paste

Where are you from btw? Obviously ambient temps play a big part in what your temps will be

referring to inside my case.

Case is all stock from lian-Li. 2 120mm fans in the front. 1 120mm in the back.
