GTA IV Activation/Multiple Computer Use

Thread Starter
Hello ladies and gentlemen, I've got a question for those of you experienced with GTA IV setup/install. But first, allow me to explain the situation.

I have just built a tower for a family member, with a configuration similar to the one I am looking to build here in about a month. I have purchased a boxed copy of GTA IV (and I can take photos of box/disk/paperwork to verify this). My interest was to toss it on this machine, see how it runs, then throw a few mods on it just to see how things look. Then uninstall so I could put it on my rig when that time comes.

My question is:

If I were to install GTA IV on this computer, would I still be able to uninstall it before giving the computer to the owner, then install it on my machine when I build it?

Or is Rockstar Social Club, and/or GFWL going to bork that second install, on the basis it has already been installed one place?

Any insight is greatly appreciated, and as usual, +1 for helpful posts!

Thanks,

Wesker.

I don't think RSC or GFWL requires you to play your GTA IV on the same rig you first installed it on. Here are excerpts from IGN's two-page article about GTA IV's DRM:

Quote:
GTA IV PC uses SecuROM for protecting our EXE until street date has passed, to ensure the retail disk is in the computer drive, and is used for Product Activation of the title. Product Activation is a one time only online authentication when installing the game. GTA IV has no install limits for the retail disc version of the game, and that version can be installed on an unlimited number of PCs by the retail disk owner.
Quote:
Also, if you install on a different PC or under a different Windows account on the same machine, you will have to authenticate that installation as well, but this is standard to any software needing a serial.
So basically the only thing you have to do is re-authenticate your copy of GTA IV on your own PC and then you're good to go. Just make sure you fully uninstall the game on that rig you're giving away if you don't want other people playing your copy. Hope that answers your question.

So assuming I do a full uninstall and de-authentication (if that's a word), I should be all set?

+1 for a well worded and supported response, good sir!

Yeah, that should do it. I'd uninstall GFWL as well just to be sure.

You're welcome. Have fun with the game.

I've installed it on all of my computers, no problems so far.

Don't worry about it. As long as you uninstall through the add/remove programs instead of just deleting the folder, you should have no problems at all.

Ive done this many times. It will be no problem installing on another machine. I have formatted drives, re installed with new equipment, all it ever ask for is the cd key. And that is without deactivating the old install. Because usually I just format the drive.

So when I install, I just pop the CD key in and not worry, or do I need to avoid GFWL or Rockstar Social Club?

Or am I over-worrying... heh. Okay, I can answer that on my own.

You need GFWL to save games, and it's a pain in the ass to get started, but once it updates itself and all that, it'll be fine.

Cool. Now just to get ENB and/or iceEnhancer installed too, we'll see how rocking this rig really is.

On the Updating through GFWL note, is there any way to manually update to a version, IE 1.0.4.0 or is it all automated to keep things on the level?

Thanks!

Wesker.
