First OC 920@3.66 need some advise

Thread Starter
this is my first time trying to oc and thanks to all the guides and post I was able to get it to 3.66 stable. I am very happy with this but would like to try for 4.0 or just fine tune it where am at now. what do you yall think of my current oc settings? what should I try to get around 3.8 or 4.0? I feel like my memory should be running at higher speeds how does thoes settings look and how can I improve it? if i go to 2:8 1600 mhz my computer wont boot this is my memory.

ok,

Disable Intel speedstep. Set your Vcore to 1.27v, up your BCLK to 200, drop your multiplier down to 19, set your memory target frequency to 1600Mhz and change your timings to what they are rated for. 7-7-7-17 is a bit odd... It's meant to be 8-8-8-24 @1600Mhz, that's why your machine isn't booting.

Oh change your memory SPD to XMP

7-7-7-17 does seem odd. That might be holding you back. Relax the timings abit to 8-8-8-24

i think i remember reading awhile back that a 920 chip was more stable that way...i could be wrong, but it's not the first time i've seen/heard that...

::edit::

this really isn't a source, but I did find it in the this thread...

Quote:
CPU Multiplier – On the 920 the range is from 12x – 21x (22x on one core when at stock speeds). It has been found that the 19x and 21x multipliers are more stable than the 20x.

Gota ask,why do that?
Well 2 reasons

A. the i7's do in fact prefer either 19 or 21.

B. If he sets it to 19, up's his BCLK to 200, he can acheive a perfect 1600Mhz on his memory

Oh yeah they do preffer an odd multi hands down, even are not as stable.

I just totally missed the fact of what you was trying ot do by getting his ram to run exactly at its correct speeds, thanks for explaining.

But he is after 4GHz so sure he needs a 20x multi. It's better to leave the multi at 20x then slowly increase the BCLK as the mobo will need additional voltage to run at a 200BCLK. Easier to fine tune.

Not true, the voltage required isn't really effected regarding an increased BCLK or an increased Multi. If he sets his multi to 25 but his BCLK to 100, he's still only running stock speeds and could get away with a 1.12 vcore.

He asked for 3.8 or 4Ghz, I provided him with enough for a 3.8Ghz overclock.
