So whats up with GPU integrated sound? (via HDMI)

post #1 of 6

Hello Everyone,

I see here a lot of integrated sounds, a lot of discrete sound cards, and other solutions, but there are a very few words about the RADEON or Geforce integrated sound devices, wich are on everyones new graphics cards.

I am planning on connecting my U2410 via HDMI to my new 560TI, and grabbing simple stereo sound from the monitors small jack to my HD555.

Or am i better, with the realtek integrated? Why would i enable/install that, if i have sound on my GPU anyways?

Lets NOT drive the discussion into discrete cards. I know that there are good ones, i also have an Audigy4 (but since its PCI, it has to go). Lets speak about how good the GPU solutions are?

It should work fine, basically just the same audio signal that comes from an HDMI DVD player.

I have never used it, but I think its so you can bit stream audio to an audio receiver via HDMI. I think its just a hdmi pass through for people who have HTPC's.

Normally on a computer, you have separate connectors for video output (e.g. DVI) and audio output (e.g. 3.5mm jack). Some people that want to transmit both video and audio over an HDMI cable to their TV or monitor. The HDMI port is on the video card so the video card manufacturers provide a way to pass sound through the video card and on to the HDMI output. It's more of a convenient feature for those who want video and audio output via a single HDMI cable.

So, if any interest, i did it now.

GTX570 DisplayPort Cable -> U2410 -> stereo jack plug -> HD555.

So far it works fine. Mp3, flac, movies, and youtube are fine, no problems with sound quality.
In AOEO: the sound is stopping for a millisecond sometimes... its like it would drop some effects, if there are many. Not that big issue, but still there.
In BFBC2: The HEADPHONE setting works flawless. Just have to raise the system volume level to 78%. This was somewhat lower with the audigy4, perhaps the U2410 has not that strong amplifying. I also tried the WARTAPES mode, but it has a lot of crackling, and way too much echo in buildings. Dunno how that was with audigy4, but its a no-go with nvidia hd audio.

Update: Got the sound stopping in GTA4 too. Turned on MB xfi2 (realtek) sound, and switching back and forth i have to say... to hell with the nvidia+U2410... sound quality is much better with the onboard. Whos fault this is, nvidia or U2410... i dont know, but i bet on the U2410 DAC...
