Cluster for High Performance Science Computing

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm looking to purchase a new cluster for performing sophisticated quantum mechanical calculations in an academic research setting. The budget is about 200K, and the requirements are:

Best CPUs available
Largest CPU Cache available
Large amount of memory per CPU
Potentially infiniband?

Does anyone have any recommendations, tips or references to get me started?

Thanks!

With a $200,000 budget; I think you're asking the wrong people.

We'd need to know a lot more. Like what the software is and how big your models are etc - all the CPUs in the world won't help if you're RAM limited, but there's no point buying a TB of RAM if you only need a GB per node.

But regardless, you can't go spending $200k based on what someone on a forum told you. I might be insane.

Of course if you want to play video game on it, we can help. Seriously though you want 6-core xeons and tesla gpus if your software can use it and then the rest of the stuff you need. Even more seriously, ask some professionals. You might even find one here but don't listen to anyone when you're about to spend 200k.

Check out Dell's servers. You can find some pretty powerful ones for a decent price there.

You'll be better pricing on the Workstations cards from Newegg/TD though.

I have $1M dollars and I need to buy a house in the US.

Without specifics (especially on the software and reliability), no one can help you really.
Once again...
