I'm not a music pirate but I'd kind of agree with the article. I mean.. when a game normally comes out I do download the "demo" and try it out.. and then I buy it.. and its always like that. The reason is because many games don't have an "official" demo... and I've bought some games which I only later regretted buying (like after 1 hour of play) because they are terrible and had I tried them before I could've saved my money and bought something else.

30-60 seconds hardly gives you an idea of what the song is going to sounds like when most of your songs average 5-10 minutes long...Hell, most of the intros of the songs I listen to last longer than that.

That said, that's how I download. I have always torrented my music, and I invest hundreds in albums every year. I download my music, and I buy the music I like, that I want a hard copy of. Downloading, youtube, etc are some of the best ways to get a feel for a band's music before investing in them.
