MSI Lightning 580 1.5GB permanently OOS?

I was wondering, is the 1.5GB version of MSI's 580 Lightning permanently OOS or something? It seems to have been sold out everywhere (literally everywhere, it's not even listed on ebay) for the past month or so, with no word on it being restocked. The 3GB edition is still widely available though. Any chance that MSI would just be completely replacing it with the 3GB version?

Nope, it's just in high demand... that every time it comes into stock, it sells out that fast. (same with the 570 TF III)

If you want, call into the stores and see when they'll get their next shipment.

I thought that's what was happening. The Lightning was being phased out and replaced with the Lightning Xtreme Edition. Maybe I'm wrong and they're just on backorder.

Your logic is all wrong there... why in the world would we EOL a cheaper card, and replace it with one that's almost $100 more???

Comparing the newegg price of the 1.5GB to the 3GB, it's only about $65 more expensive. Like him, I assumed that it might be phased out for the 3GB version since the price difference isn't a whole lot more for a somewhat superior card, especially since everyone has been OOS of the 1.5GB for about a month now, but not the 3GB.

I'm glad to hear the 1.5GB isn't at its EOL though. This might be an exercise in futility though, but might I ask when more 1.5GB units will be shipped to retailers?

I saw it on sale at Newegg about two weeks ago. They show up periodically, but you have to physically check. I wouldn't hold my breath for an email to notify me of something like that since auto-correspondents are always late.

$65 for a card that performs slower than a 1.5GB card? 3GB memory has higher latency, don't forget that.

For 99% of the people out there, this won't matter since the performance hit is about 2-3%. For the 1% of users who insist on benchmarking, this matters a lot.

I tried getting a 2nd Lightning for like 3 to 4 weeks for SLI, I finally gave up and got a regular Twin Frozr II. Those Lightnings are in incredibly high demand
