But Mom, I want to underclock!

TLDR: Can I turn my DDR3 1600 into something my i7 950 can get along with, say 1066 or 1333, and how exactly? Should I just get 1066 sticks instead?

So I had the following working for about three months:

i7 950
DDR3 1600 12gb
GA-X58A-UDR3 motherboard

Stock settings.

Slowly but surely it started hanging during shut down until one day it decided not to boot. Well, it posts, but 3 seconds into loading the OS it reboots.

I've RMA's the motherboard and swapped out everything. Today I called Intel and they advised me of something I overlooked when building the box. The i7 950's voltage is only 1.5 compared to the 1.65 or higher for the memory, plus, the CPU's onboard memory controller will downclock the 1600 to 1066.

Lesson of the day, don't assume matching the memory to the motherboard means it matches the CPU as well.

Assuming that's the problem:
  1. Can I downclock the memory to something the CPU can handle?
  2. What would the appropriate settings be?
  3. Would it be better to just get DDR3 1066 instead?

Thanks

I run my 1600 MHz memory with my 950 and have no issues, and my memory is running an actual 1600 MHz. Every monitoring software I use (cpuz etc) confirms it.

1. Yes
2. stock settings 1.65v / 1333mhz 8-9-8 1.65v if you wan't to be 100% stable
3. No. its almost the same price.

Try 1333Mhz CAS 8.
Or, you can get to 1066Mhz And Go CAS 7-CAS 6.

Thanks, guys.

I had it running for 3 months, but something borked. Intel wants me to try the lower timings before they RMA.

Antsu, so the 1.65 won't conflict with the CPU's 1.5? How does that work with the on-board mem controller?
