Best hdds for a Media Server/HTPC

Thread Starter
As the title says I am in the process of piecing together a home server/HTPC. I was wondering what drives would be best for this? I am looking at 1-2TB drives that won't break the bank.

I am considering the Samsung F4's right now, but if there is any other drive out there that is just and good and is cheaper then I would love to hear about it.

I am hesitant on the WD Green drives based on the reviews on Newegg talking about the reliability issues. Are they really that unreliable?

Also have a question about RAID configuration. I want to set up this server that will give me the best reliability and performance possible. So if one drive goes down I won't lose any data. What config would be best for this setup? Thanks!

Not anymore. But the first few batches were.

WD seems to have issues with all their 4-platter drives. But their 2/3 platter drives do seem to be reliable. Now all WD Green 1.5/2TB drives are 2/3 platter.

F4 2TB's would be solid choices.

You say just the 1.5 and 2 TB WD green drives are 2/3 platter. Does the mean the the 1TB WD green drives are not? Also what you would you go with, the WD greens or the F4s?

WD Green 1TB's are 2 platter - but often they cost more than 1.5TB Greens, so what point is there in buying them?

My open ended statement was aimed more at WD Green 2.5/3TB drives, which currently have a lot of platters.

I'm in Canada, so I'd go with WD Green 2TB drives. They're about 40% cheaper than F4 2TB's here.

I have been looking into the WD Caviar Black hdds to put into this. But I have read that they and the WD green drives have trouble running in RAID. Especially the two I am looking at running, RAID 5 and RAID 10. I haven't been able to find an up to date thread on this subject. So do the WD black still have problems running in RAID 5 or 10? I am leaning towards going with the blacks since they seem to be more reliable and that is the #1 quality I look for in a hdd.

If it's for an HTPC, the Caviar Green are not gonna be spinning all the time if I ain't wrong so they'll be quieter which is a big plus if the computer is in the same room as the TV.

I was going to go with those but the reliability complaints on Newegg have scared me quite a bit. Plus I want to eventually put the drives in a RAID config, since this will double as my home server. But I have read that the WD green drives aren't the best for RAID and sometimes flat out don't work. Is this true?

I'm using Hitachi 5k3000 which work great, got them back in March I think and haven't had any issues with a 4 disc RAID5 (RAID5 is probably what you want also.) Saw someone with a 40TB array with them, but can't find the thread right now.

Other good drive are the Samsung F4, I have no experience with Seagates lately.

Other than those, the next choices are the more expensive Enterprise level drives which are suppose to be more reliable and have longer warranties but also cost a decent amount more.

Remember that RAID is just redundancy, you still will need backups.

Thank you for the info! I was originally planning on going with the F4's for this build, but I am a fanboy of WD hdd redface.gif. Will the F4's work ok in a raid config since they are also green drives as well?

It's actually not the HDD so much as the SATA controller the drives are running off of.

Some people have WD Black arrays without any issues. Other people have issues. Some people have Samsung F4 arrays without any issues. Other people have issues.

I think some controllers are more strict about kicking drives out of arrays after 8 seconds of not responding - but others understand how consumer drives behave, and won't kick them out even if there's a problem.
