I am building a new computer as soon as I get moved in to my new place. My main purpose for this computer will be gaming. My budget is $1500 which needs to include the whole functional tower (and windows 7) plus a good monitor. I dont really know what the ideal motherboards are for i5 2500k's these days. So I do need some help with that.

cpu: i am thinking i5 2500k
cooler: cm hyper 212+
mobo
ram
psu
hdd
case: help me
os:windows 7
monitor: 23'' or +
videocard: maybe radeon 6870
dvdrw: nothing fancy

$1500 is quite a bit, why not a better GPU, why not a better cpu cooler? Lots of things have gotten cheaper since many years ago including ram and HDD's.

Heres a simple cookie cutter build I put together; you can adjust to your liking. I put in a much better cooler, a much better graphics card, and also a very good PSU; most consider it one of the best.

I purposely left out the case because I don't know what style you would prefer. Generally cases from CoolerMaster, SilverStone, Lian Li are very popular and have good airflow.

Total comes out with $1200 without case and Windows 7. If you are a student with a .edu email account, you can get windows7 for $45. So this leaves you about $250 for additional addons like an SSD, another monitor or even a better graphics card if you wish. It'd also help if you mentioned what games you like to play so we can recommend you different GPU's.

I am liking what you recommended so far, so I am going off that as my start point. Here are a few notes though, the 1500 budget has to be after shipping costs and tax, and I am not a student so I will probably have to pay the full 99 dollars for windows 7 unfortunately. As for the case, I was really hoping the arc midi from fractal designs would be available by now but I cant seem to find it so basically that boils down to something that looks nice and simple and has stellar airflow and is able to fit everything, such as that videocard and cpu heatsink and ram. And of course the lower the cost for those requirements the better. Aesthetically, I detest the haf 932 and side windows in general.

Okay, Here's the tip on shipping from Newegg. NewEgg has a 3rd party offer called ShopRunner, It's pretty much a similar to Amazon Prime if you know what that is. Basically you pay $80 per year and receive free 2 day shipping for any products you order. However... ShopRunner has a one time 30 day trial. So basically, Sign up for shoprunner with your credit card and what not, it wont charge you unless you decide to keep it after 30 days; EVEN IF YOU PURCHASED ITEMS! That's basically what I did. Just remember to cancel before 30 days is up or if you like the service and want to use it longer you can choose to pay $80 per year.

As for the case, After seeing the arc midi, I kind of have a sense of what kind of style you're looking for. I recommend the corsair 650D (or any silverstone case; they make very sleek cases with good airflow as well). Very sleek, modern look, lots of space, black interior and great cable management + airflow. I'm pretty sure it will fit the larger heatsinks as well, but please do research on that.

If you have extra money aside and plan on overclocking, I would get a Noctua NH14 cooler or a Thermalright Silver Arrow. They are much better, much beefier cpu coolers, and some regard them as one of the best forms of air cooling.

Also as mentioned by others, you could always spend a bit more into the GPU, but in most cases the 6950 will suit most, if not all your needs. Still, having the best of the best never hurt. You might also wanna list any games you may be playing with this rig.

As for windows 7, $99 is not all that bad of a price to pay considering what you get, however if you know anyone with a .edu email account, you could save $50.
