slow sata 3 corsair force 3 ssd with asrock extreme6 x58 (marvell 9128)

Thread Starter
I have a new corsair force 3 ssd serial starting with 1129 so it is well past the 1122 and former with issues. I also have a new asrock extreme6 x58 with the marvell 9128 sata 3. In the bios I have the ssd performance enabled. I also set all the sata II and 3 ports to ahci mode. In device manager I see 3 instances of the marvell 91xx SATA 6G controller and it is using marvell driver version 1.0.0.1051. These are the latest drivers on the asrock site. The disk shows up corsair force 3 ssd SCSI disk drive using driver version 6.1.7600.16385.

I did use acronis to copy my corsair f120 image to this force 3. I used diskpart and verified alignment is still 1024. No issues with this.

My atto benchmarks with this drive absolutely suck. I know the marvell 9128 isn't going to let the drive operate to max capacity but there is clearly something wrong here. I should be topping out around 400 and it should be consistently better not dipping down. Any ideas?

Well the new driver is no better.

corsairforce3newahcisat.jpg

Shouldn't the sata 6 be faster than the intel on sata II 3Gb/s? Won't the force 3 ssd well over saturate the bandwidth on the intel ICH10R? In any case I expected way better results from the marvell. It should be near 400MB/s and be without the hiccups. What gives?

Here it is on the sata II connection (intel ICH10R).

corsairforce3newahcisat.jpg

Basically no point for me to have upgraded from corsair f120 to the corsair force 3 if I can't use it on the sata 6 marvell controller right? This is a real pisser especially after having to RMA the corsair force 3 in the first place due to an early serial with the issues.

I still know that marvell is no where near its ability. Do you think I got a bad corsair force 3 drive back from rma? Serial starts with 1129. Or could it be the motherboard? Any easy/other way to test this?

Uninstall the marvell driver. It's garbage - I wouldn't recommend that at all, and so would most other people.

Get the intel driver instead, it works with SATA 6GB/s devices, and almost every SSD user uses it for their Vertex, Crucial, etc drives.

Download the intel ones here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=20215&ProductFamily=Chipsets&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Rapid+Storage+Technology&lang=eng

You should get a better performance boost, as long as you have ACHI enabled in the BIOS and that it's connected to a SATA 6GB/s port, and not a SATA 3GB/s port. You should also use the sata cable that came with your mobo, not some old ones you're using.

I found this thread as I was also having issues with poor performance with the Marvell 9128 chip. I have 2 WD black sata3 drives in raid0 configuration and i know that a single drive gives me a throughput of about 140mb/s so i was expecting to see about 260mb/s with them in raid zero however i found this:

Using Microsoft ACHI drivers with empty partition
Untitled%252520picture.jpg

Using Microsoft ACHI drivers half full partition
Untitled%252520picture1.jpg

Using marvell drivers (1.2.0.1002 and 1.2.0.1003) with empty partition
Untitled%252520picture2.jpg

Using marvell drivers (1.2.0.1002 and 1.2.0.1003) half full partition
Untitled%252520picture3.jpg

as you can see the microsoft happily reaches nearly 300mb/s but the marvell drivers seem to hit a limit or wall and refuse to go faster than 200mb/s which is really annoying because it performs much better on the smaller transfers (below 64k) which incidentally is the stripe size of the RAID 0 array pretty sure thats not a co-incidence. does anyone know what the problem is or anyway to get the marvell drivers to perform at these better speeds past 64k boundary? it shows potential of better performance but hits this wall maybe they are just rubbish drivers and it cant be fixed.

Are you saying the intel driver will take the place of the marvell driver but still work with the marvell 9128 hardware and my ssd? I just want to make sure I'm understanding you right because I have always used mfg specific drivers in the past.

That's right, uninstall the Marvell driver, then shut it down. In the BIOS you should be able to switch between the Marvell and Intel SATA controllers, set it to Intel, then boot up and install the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers. Also is your drive over half full? If so the performance will start to decrease.

Edit: Check to see if you can switch between the controllers in the BIOS before you uninstall the Marvell driver.

Then you are saying to switch the sata cable to the intel ich10r onboard controller right? That is only 3Gb/s sata II. So I will never see anywhere near max performance from this drive then right? Isn't it only capable of like 300MB/s that way?

There is no onboard option for sata 3 6Gb/s on the x58 1366 socket right (besides underperforming marvell 9128)?
