It's happened to me. More so when I was 12 and church members were dropping off PC's for me to take home lol!! I started getting paid shortly after that though.

60$ for a friend for 2.5 hours is very fair. That's a good deal. I compete with worst buy and it's geek squad and they charge an arm and a leg!! I fix their mistakes a lot and people leave wondering why best buy kept their PC for a week and charged them 75$ an hour or upwards of 275$ for 100gb backup and os reinstall. They stay busy so people must think their prices are ok.

ok guys in the future i will charge $50-$60 bucks for a simple fix like this, but i feel better charging someone this amount before hand so they know what to expect...

im going to just charge him $40

for future reference what should i charge for an os install, computer build, backup, or any other combination of things...

thanks a lot

Charge different labor rates for different services and estimate hours on things like diagnostics and what not. When I moved to this city, first thing I did was go to best buy and under cut them in everything on their geek squad price list.

Diagnostic -$20 just give it to them for free if they end up using you.
Open case -$40
Virus removal -$80, charge 25$ per hour over 2hours.
Os reinstall w/ no backup - $100, +$25-$50 for extra software install and setup.
Data backup - $0.30-$0.45 per Gb. Depends on how you are doing it.
New build - $125-$200. Depends on how much consulting work you did for them. Procuring parts, staying in budget. This can all use up some time. Keep it on the lower range for easy builds and stuff.

Up the prices for time consuming things, this is roughly what I charge customers. For good friends I'll take a 20$ for gas or a burger and of course I don't expect anything if it's something easy. But if it's work, then it's work yah? Lol

well the US $ is pretty strong in smaller countries. I did the currency exchange and $60 is almost $180 in Malaysia. So if you wanna make so more $$$ you know where to go
