confused on upgrading

Thread Starter
On a desktop you just get a new card that matches your psu limit..on a laptop some say you can on certain laptops..some laptops have chips some have cards..if i get a newer.laptop with a 580m will it be upgradeable when the next huge card comes out? Also do all the laptop gpu cards look the same..and what about the cpu..andd where do you buy laptop parts?

Upgrading laptops is usually a fiddly job since parts can't be easily found in retail. You can get HDDs, RAM and sometimes processors in retail, but for GPUs you need to search on ebay; specialist sites do sell upgrade GPUs, but on a price premium that it's almost cheaper to buy a new lappy altogether.
On a laptop what limits you is the thermal headroom. For example it's not recommended to replace a 25W CPU with a 45W CPU, even if the latter is supported by the motherboard; same with GPUs - the 580m is a 100W part as far as I know, so if you find a compatible replacement it must be at or under 100W. Laptop GPUs comply to the MXM standard - similar to PCIe for desktops. However MXM isn't enough (unlike desktops) because aside from having the MXM plug identical the graphics card layout must be identical to fit the cooling system; you don't want the replacement GPU 1 inch to the side of the cooler.
Bricks (laptop's PSU) is sized that it can power at least as much as the cooling system can dissipate, so that won't be an issue.

hope that clears up a few things
