For one, 3DS sales are not when they projected, due to a combination of a lack of premiere titles, a way too high price tag, and (this is my experience, but I assume I am not alone) the 3D just not being all that "amazing" once you actually start playing with it. And two, Wii sales have dropped off the map...everyone who wants one has one, they just aren't moving anymore. So they had to do something to get units of 3DS moving and generate some positive cash flow.

And Vita is clearly superior hardware, Nintendo had to do something to establish a customer base before that thing comes out and the fence sitters are left with an obvious, non-Nintendo choice.

Personally, I think I'm skipping both handhelds. I believe the future of portable gaming lies with phones, not dedicated gaming units. The only people I see porting around a DS or a PSP are kids. But everyone has a phone. Yes, iPhones and such don't have controls as good as a real gaming unit...but that's what my "real" consoles are for, I believe "good enough" is all that matters in portable gaming. (That Playstation phone thingamajig may be a best-of-both-worlds compromise, I'm curious to see how well it actually works.)
Everyone in my highschool either had a DS or PSP on them.
I constantly see other people even older with DS as well, especially restaurants.

Actually, last week, I saw someone using a PSP as an MP3 player. Now thats really rare now-a-days. I loved my PSP as a multimedia device

As for the Xperia play, it didn't turn out that great. If the platform itself (aside from just Android) became more popular (ie dedicated controls) then phones would definetly get the best-of-both-worlds. But until then, phones will never keep up.

Haha my psp is pretty much just my portable movie player. I bring it to work coz my rig has a stereo, plug it in and watch movies when the drilling is slow

Psp games lately have done nothing for me, especially since ghost of Sparta.

I'm keen to try the new 3ds now as nintendos portable range imo has more appeal.

I wasn't expecting an official price drop this early. I'm sure the 3DS would of sold quite good during the holiday season with the current price since it's getting some great games. This is just great news and early adopters can't be mad now since they will be getting 20 free games and that's a good deal. I'm still not sure if I'm going to get the 3DS when the price goes into effect since I wanted to see what kind of deals the 3DS will get during black Friday.

I'm all over this, I was going to get one next week but will wait obviously. The 3d is actually very well done imo and 3d nintendo gets me randy

3D is just a gimmick. Pretty soon people are going to realize it's a waste of money; just like Blu-Ray is struggling to become the standard - remember all that hype about HD-DVD & Blu-Ray?.
