?

EVERYBODY wants a blu ray player when they are buying a new home theatre setup. And now that most blurays cost the same as DVD, only people still buying DVDs just don't have a bluray player yet.

Personally I think 3d I just taking off. Every second movie released at the cinema is in 3d and soon more and more people are gonna start saying "hey I missed that in 3d at the cinema, I'll buy the 3d bluray."

And right there you got 2 birds with 1 stone.

Besides, super Mario land 3d in november, sold.

Wow comparing it to Blu Ray is pretty stupid, Blu Ray is the biggest jump in home video ever with 6x the resolution of DVD's. It's not just numbers either, a Blu Ray looks way way better than a dvd could ever hope too (on a large hd screen). A Blu Ray is better than having a reel of the film.

I also like the 3d effect, to each his own but it's not "just a gimmick" for me

At this rate, I think you'll be waiting a while. They've sold less then a million unit. I dont see a revision for a while.

? Blu-Ray is the standard for HD discs. It is no longer struggling to establish that claim. Now it certainly competes with other delivery channels, specifically DVDs (which are SD, obviously) and streaming (no discs).

But they key point here is that people are not in any hurry to replace their DVD player with a Blu-Ray player. Sure, when the DVD player is toast and needs replaced, only a fool would not buy a Blu-Ray player. And when people are buying whole new entertainment centers, sure they are getting Blu-Ray players (frequently as part of a bundle). But the status quo is strong here...without a catalyst, many people feel no need to replace what they have.

Now tying back to the last post, I truly believe that their would be more "pressure" to upgrade (even needlessly so) if HD-DVD had won the format war. Irrespective of which format was "better" (I no longer care), the fact that HD-DVD was obviously "hi-def DVD"...i.e., the next, better iteration of what people already had, as opposed to a "brand new thing" such as Blu-Ray...would have helped get people on board the upgrade treadmill. Cripes, HD-DVD even had the same DVD logo, just with HD in front in the same font. That appeals to people, it makes them more comfortable with their purchase. Now I don't know how much of a difference this would have made, but I do believe it would have been non-negligible.

3D ticket sales numbers have dropped sharply over the last year. Blame it on 3D being overhyped or oversaturated, or on poor quality 3D remixes of movies shot in 2D, or whatever...the fact is that the sales are cratering.

Now you're point about getting the 3D version for home might have some merit combined with the previous point. When people replace their existing TV or Blu-Ray player, they are likely to get 3D-capable replacements. But again, that only applies to people actually replacing their existing stuff, which by all measures is still relatively new. And there is still the problem of the expensive glasses. Until we can use cheap throwaway glasses at home, it will be viewed by the masses as an unnecessary expense. Not valueless, but perhaps not worth the exorbitant prices and thus easy to cut out when trying to save a penny.

That's overstating it. Even though I find the 3D underwhelming, it is still a nice technology over the DS. It will sell nicely in the long run as DS units leave the channel, but it will not be the massive sales juggernaut Nintendo was hoping for.

So, so wrong. If you think DVD-to-Blu-Ray even approaches the visual jump we got from VHS-to-DVD, you're either so young that you never experienced the VHS era, or you're willfully forgetting that era. VHS was fugly, there's just no other way to put it.

And watching both Blu-Rays and DVDs (not upscaled) on my 52" Bravia, yes there is a difference. But not anywhere near the jump you are making out. My wife claims she can't really even tell much of a difference. A point I repeatedly make, that few on OCN seem to believe since we are technopholes: Average Joe does not get the same out of Blu-Ray that we do. To most people, DVDs (especially if they are upscaled) are perfectly fine, definitely good enough to avoid a "need" to buy a Blu-Ray player.
