[BBC] BT ordered to block pirate links - Page 4

post #31 of 50
The problem with doing this is while those sites may provide links to illegal content downloads, they also provide links to perfectly acceptable open source content that is freely available to all.

I say find a new method to track those who are uploading and go after them. There are millions and millions of downloaders, what percentage of them also rip content and strip them of DRM then redistribute?

I live in a country village and we are classified as a "rural exchange".. Meaning we don't even have ADSL2 yet... We are stuck with upto 8MB DSL MAX.... Oh and BT is the ONLY provider running from our exchange.

My phone line is pretty short and fairly good quality as well... So I can get the top end of DSL MAX... But what annoys me is what i COULD be getting if I had ADSL2 or even the FTTC BT Infinity Fibre service.

Well you can be 100% sure that other ISP and sites will follow very fast , this ruling has opened a way for MAFIAA to block out any site they wish.

This is not going to help VM is next one on the list.

I never used Newzbin and I am with VM but i still see this news as very worrying , this is just a beginning.
Soon tons of similar lawsuits will follow and dozens of websites will be blocked , no matter if your ISP is BT , VM , SKY , Talk Talk or other.
I really hope someone will find a way around that , this approach to the problem is wrong.
MAFIAA is desperately clinging to their obsolete business model.
If only they would spend the same amount of money money on improving their sales model as they spend on funding those ridiculous lawsuits they would come out with better result.

Oh and one last thing :

After reading this naive comment :

""Finally, it seems we have a way to deal with rogue sites which will benefit the film industry including UK independent distributors and, more broadly, the entire creative sector""
Lord Puttnam President, Film Distributers Association

Only thing to say would be :
Yeah dream on grandpa

This will never work, the faster you block these sites, the faster new ones will pop up.

Nice to see BT wasting time.

Offtopic: BT internet is awful, the worst ive ever had the displeasure of using - their home hub is utter garbage - god knows how they get away with advertising it as the best wireless router in the UK.

I know Sky use BT lines, I wonder if they will be effected?

This applys to BT Retail for now.

I know my ISP will be one of the last in the list probably due to it only having around 30k customers.

I'm quite certain the only users that have BT are Old people and those who know nothing about computers/the internet ( e.g. kids that think internet is only = facebook, twitter and youtube).

So, I doubt this ruling will actually do anything.

I'm on BT and hardly ever have any problems, the wireless hub is excellent BTW and when set up properly it's doubtful it would be the cause of a drop in connection!

Having said that when my next couple of months is up I'm off to virgin for the whole package same price as BT Faster DL speed and HD TV for sod all!

My Bt line will max out at 1.5~MB/s less than a tenth of the 20M I pay for! Virgin 50M capps out at 4-5MB/s again a tenth of what is paid for.

This is in grimsby U.K and I think they all rob you!

Those speed are in Mb (megabits) not in MB (megabytes).
20Mb = 2.5 MB
50Mb = 6.25 MB
In example I'm running Virgin 50Mb and i max out at roughly 5.5 MB on Steam or Torrents , sometimes it goes a little higher.
And taking as 50Mb = 6.25 MB i think it's fair enough.
