Sounds great to me. In a few days I think i'll take the plunge with the PSU as the MIS Lightning card appears to be a pre-order on Scan.co.uk at the moment. 15th of August release apparently

Might get the additional RAM at the same time in preperation.

Thanks for all the help everyone - you guys are quite the pool of knowledge.

If I were you, I would go for a asus 580 matrix! It's prob the best card out there, ildes around 27 and loads around 70 @ 980mhz @ 1.1.(fan speed at 100) Plus the load glow effects are quite a feat! Looks aggressive in your case while others see it as a trophy. It's a overclocking champ! It will not dissapoint!

And thanks for the GPU list Aniket, i'll look at the benchmark data later!
A modular PSU has removable cables. Most of them still have the motherboard and CPU power cables hardwired while the rest come detached in a separate bag in the box. So when you are setting it all up, you get to choose which cables you attach.

Some PSUs are more modular than others while some are "fully" modular which means that absolutely none of the cables are hardwired.

Unfortunately, modular PSUs are more expensive and I think your budget is way too tight to include a ~750W modular PSU so you can go SLI later on. I mean the GTX 580 is going to be at least £375 to £400, and the memory is going to be at least £40 which only leaves £60 to £80 for the PSU. With a budget like that, it will be next to impossible to find a recommendable modular unit. However, if we stretch to the £600 budget, then it'll be absolutely no problem.

So you can stay with the £500 budget and get a good non-modular 750W PSU (every cable is hardwired), or you can stretch the budget in order to get a good modular unit.

So for now, here are all of the PSUs I can recommend regardless of price (for the purpose of enabling you to make an informed decision):

Non-modular at eBuyer

Modular at eBuyer

Non-modular at Aria

Modular at Aria

Non-modular at Scan

Modular at Scan

So yeah: take your pick. hehe

Ha ha, that's quite the list.

I'm liking the idea of a modular PSU. Seems like it'll be much tidier tbh. Thanks for the list, i'll have a look through and pick something that suits!

Again a big thanks to all who have contributed here - i'll post back when I take the plunge. Perhaps i'll finally be able to play Civ V on huge maps with no slowdown late game

A very fine choice for both of those. The HX850 is a great PSU and the Lightning is one of the best 580s you can get. Hope you enjoy.
