Empire Earth 1, got it with a Compaq computer when I was like 10, played it for around 8 years. Sadly, the sequels were rubbish.

Mirrors edge, got it for $4 (they couldn't give it away in Aussie) loved it once I stopped trying to kill all the police.

FEAR, way scarier than most horror games and the reflex time was great (Alma scared the crap out of me the first time I saw her). Got it from a friend in demo form, got it the next day.

Fear is the only game in over 25 years of gaming that forced me to take a break every 35-45min because of stress....it's simply draining....

Stalker SoC - had low expectations given it was in the works forEVER, but I've had it for about four years now, I've played single-player like 15 times w/various mods, still pick it up and play it start to finish every few months (in the middle of another run-through this week actually). Best investment in a game ever for me.

JC2 - had no idea how epic it would be just from the tiny demo. The size of the game world is truly astounding, and it's just great fun, both to look at, and pick up and play when nothing else sounds fun.

Singularity, Darksiders - had zero expectations, got 'em super-cheap, totally enjoyed both games.

Assassin's Creed 2 and Mass Effect 2 - was really not a fan of the first one's of either of those two games (I know, sacrilege when it comes to ME in some people's eyes) but I picked up both sequels anyways, and loved both of them.

Titan Quest - No idea why not, but I'd literally never heard of it back when I bought TQ/IT combo box back in '08. Somehow I'd just totally missed the release of that game. As such, I expected it to be a wasted $19.99. Boy was I wrong. Still play it sometimes, it still loads of fun. I wish Dungeon Siege 2 looked as good (and was designed for higher res widescreens), I'd probably still play that one if it did.

World of Goo - sounded kinda lame but got it in a Steam Indie bundle, was hooked on it for a couple days straight. Bonus: it runs fine even on my cheap craptop.

Lara Croft and Guardian of Light - a fresh, fun new take on the whole Lara experience, which I've always liked but has grown pretty stale (although the last regular one was pretty fun ... Underworld or something like that? That also was better than I expected.)

Dungeon Siege 3 - turned out to be loads more fun than it seemed it would be from the demo (which made it seem terrible). I'm still disappointed it's SOOOO not like DS and DS2, but if you take it out of that context and judge it as it's own game ... it's really not too bad.

FarCry - the amazing demo's that came out a couple months before the game (which I played through like 10 times each at least) barely prepared me for sheer amazing-ness that was that game, back when it came out.

HL2 - Never played HL, had no idea what to expect from HL2 ... figured it would be cool just because of the hype that preceded it's release ... ended up buying it the day it came out, and was completely blown away by it.

Star Wars Republic Commando - got it for free from a friend, no idea what to expect, ended up thinking it was pretty flippin' fun.

That's about it for the big surprises for me. Most of my other faves I knew were gonna be awesome from the demo's, or reviews from websites or friends. FEAR, Prey, Borderlands, Half-Life 2 episodes (where is my Episode 3 dangit!!!), Fallout 3, Bioshock, for example ... were not big surprises
