[In] 8 Core Bulldozer Price Same As Sandy Bridge 2600K - Page 27

Oh well we can't win them all.

It's as simple as this, company A uses one way to get the job done and company B uses another.

But in effect they do a similar thing, they get the work done.

So does Intels Hyper threading force two threads through one core or not?.

The description I read what that with the use of hyper threading is that one physical core appears as two logical cores to the OS therefore allowing two scheduled threads or processes to run simultaneously. So when exe resources are not used by the current task in a processor a hyper-threading processor can use the resources to execute another scheduled task.

So yeah it does keep it fed better, but at what cost.

AMD has a physical version of the same process a "Module", I'll go back to my company A and company B analogy.

but this is what I find interesting.

Quote:
Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) employs targeted duplication of some hardware and sharing of other hardware in order to track and execute two threads in a single core. That's the approach Intel uses its current, Nehalem-derived processors.

"Bulldozer module." This module, shares portions of a traditional core—including the instruction fetch, decode, and floating-point units and L2 cache—between two otherwise-complete processor cores. The resources AMD chose to share are not always fully utilized in a single core, so not duplicating them could be a win on multiple fronts. The firm claims a Bulldozer module can achieve 80% of the performance of two complete cores of the same capability.

But why program for one core when parallel processing is the future.

serial execution of 2 threads 1 core (like ht) != parallel execution of 2 threads 2 cores

alltho this is a bit more complex since various bits and pieces are shared between the cores by both amd and intel.. either way BD module design is NOT an "answer" to HT, they both were developed for different reasons, their superficial similarities just made a good topic to write an article about

If he plays any CPU dependent games I'd recommend a quad or hex core BD (depending on how threaded they are).

I'm wondering if AMD will allow the quad to perform better in single threaded apps. Shutdown a core in each module -> each core has all the cache and other resources that normally 2 have. Should give a nice boost.

Should end all the "oh what about single threaded apps we don't need more cores". Get one of those then and enjoy an even better performance in all your single threaded apps.

But I do agree that it's not easy to multithread apps and especially games. I'm a programmer myself and multithreaded is good for batch processing files etc but it's a lot harder in games. But even then, the most demanding games _ARE_ heavily multithreaded (bfbc2, bf3, ...). If you need more power I'm sure you can split it up in more threads.

Agreed! It will be very sad for the enthusiast market if rumors are true and the performance is only up there with Nehalem.

Now, if it's a real competitor and overclocks like a dream, and they include SLI chipsets, I'll make the switch back.

All 990 chipset do sli and crossfire...

If the performance is nehalem and it is priced right I will be happy.

If priced right is dirt cheap you can forget about it. I full expect the two 8 cores over 250 dollars, the six core around 220 and the 4 core around 185

To each his/her own, but to be honest I would be very dissapointed in BD 8core that only rivals Nehalem performance (HT On) when rumored pricing is said to be $300, which we all know is 2600k territory, and at that price point the clear winner by far would be Intel's 2600k.

Let's hope AMD pulls out a Win for the Enthusiasts sake, cuz pricing at $300 will be a complete failure at that point.

It is a answer to Hyperthreading but the flaw is

Hyperthreading only scales with the cores and not the threads...A application that comes out that uses 8 threads

Hyperthreading with 8 threads and 4 cores is screwed
4 x 6000 only equals 24K
8 x 3000 only equals 24K

CMT is linear it has no problems like Hyperthreading
1 x 6000 = 6K
8 x 6000 = 48K

CMT -> CMP
CMT is another way of doing CMP

8 core Phenom II -> 8 core "Bulldozer" FX
with the same feature sets have equal theoretical peak performance
But "Bulldozer" FX will get closer to the peak than Phenom II
