[In] 8 Core Bulldozer Price Same As Sandy Bridge 2600K - Page 36

My point is that nobody in their right mind would actually suggest a 1090T over a 2500k in any circumstance. Find me the website or expert that would do that. Jeez, how many times are 2500k's recommended over anything else right here on OCN? This is just absolute fact....

Come September its possible that the recommendations will switch to BD over SB and if they are better I'll be the first to admit it. But nobody should be under any illusion that Thuban is equal (or even close to) Sandy Bridge...

2500K is $45 more... is there a point?

Uh, yeah, single threaded performance. It's dismal on my deneb, in comparison to even my i5 760, let alone the 2500ks.
Why upgrade?

Did your spread sheets faulter, or calculate quick enough on your deneb..?

Other than theory.. what programs do you specifically use, that are only single thread & need speed? What do you do, that requires you to never multi-task and always have 1 program running, but need that 1 program to be the epitome of speed..?

Just curious..

I have an AM3 board with a 555BE in it. The chip I have won't unlock, so if that system needs more horsepower, getting a Thuban to just drop into it and go would be much more practical and economical than replacing the board and having to reinstall window as well.

I have emulators (everything from DOSBox to BSNES) that are heavily dependent on single threaded performance, to the point where my i7 970 at 4.25GHz is barely sufficient to do certain things with them at acceptable speed, and a Phenom II at 4-4.2GHz is unusable.

I love how people just assume everyone does nothing but play games all day and will have no use for an 8 core CPU. Try to look past your own self for a minute, not everyone has the same workloads and same day to day activities and uses for a CPU. Tell my 500+ hours of home video that need encoding that I can't use an 8 core CPU that hopefully will be faster than my current 2600K. I'll take any speed increase that BD can afford to give me. It is a blessing for every minute I can get decreased off the total time it takes to do each hour of video. I'm talking hundreds if not thousands of hours of CPU time.

Typical for most? Probably not, but doesn't mean there are people that don't need it.

Not taking sides here, but SandyBridge is the performance king atm, AMD knows that is as fallen behind with no real chance to recover for the time being.

With that said, AMD is pretty much working on price/performance for their products, everyone has their favorites, everyones a fanboy to some extent.

The builds are mainly based on what you plan to do with it(gaming/audio-video editing/surfing/etc) and what people can afford or how much they are willing to spend for the performance they want or expect.

Personally, i dont see the need for more than 4cores right now, even with the i7 w/4cores(8threads) cpu, hyperthreading is a gimmick IMO, we have yet to have any program or game that will take full advantage of the extra cores, so why waste the money on what you dont need currently.

Within 20% is not close?
find me a single test in here that shows 50% performance increase. Other than ram test

I haven't bothered to read what this argument about, but 20% is quite a large gap when comparing anything.

Folding, encoding, rendering do take advantage of 8 even 12 threaded CPU's. Just because in your opinion you think that Hyper threading is a gimmick, it doesn't mean it actually is.

AMD has taken a different approach in creating an 8 THREADED CPU. BD 8 Core should do great at folding, rendering, encoding and virtually any other program that DOES take advantage of 4 or more threads. BD CPU's will be GREAT for servers as well.

The CPU world doesn't just revolve around gaming, but on OCN the majority of the builds are gaming oriented.
