[TC] Nielsen: Android Takes Top OS Spot, Apple Tops Manufacturers

Nielsen comes bearing good news today for devotees of the little green robot: as of this past June, Android has claimed the top spot in the U.S. smartphone OS market. Figures have it as comprising a full 39% of the market, with its closest competitor Apple a distant second at 28%. Oh, and let’s not forget the BlackBerry OS, which is currently dragging its feet at 20%. Bringing up the rear are Windows Phone 7 at 9%, which is a bit of an accomplishment considering the major head start its competitors enjoyed, and WebOS and Symbian (both at 2%).

Anyway I'm happy to see WP7 at a reasonable number. It's a great OS for people don't want to buy into Apple or want the sluggish UI in Android.

I see RIM as a non factor in a few years being that I've never heard anyone who actually wants a blackberry or know anyone that has a blackberry that would buy another.

Good. Now all we need is for peripheral manufacturers to stop pandering to Apple at the expense of other technology. I shouldn't have to buy a crapPod to be able to see album art and interact with my MP3 files on my USB stick with my car's head unit.

And the frivolous patents.

In seriousness; yes, they basically make the logo and design the cases. The iPhone and iPad are a bit more involved, but still basically just collections of tech from other companies.

While I agree with this, they need to standardize ports so something that works with an iPod also works with any other MP3 device.
