Cheapest i5-2500k upgrade?

Thread Starter
I'm currently running a small minecraft server. I have it running on an E8400 @3.6ghz and 6 gb of RAM(2x2gb then an extra 2gb stick).

I've been wanting to upgrade to something to allow more players and I'm sure that an i5 will do.

I'm trying to get the cheapest upgrade possible. I just need CPU, mobo, and RAM.

Should I go with a micro-ATX? or should I try to stick with a cheaper ATX?

I am going to need 16gb of RAM(4x8gb).

Try to see if you have any microcenter near you. A month ago if you got the 2500k and mobo combo you saved like $40 or more.

Micro ATX will do if you are not planning on adding expansion slots in the future.

4x8gb of ram would be 32gb btw . That would be a lot of ram

There are so many good deals on ram lately thought that it shouldn't be a problem. Just check the online deals section.

Microcenter is still running the 40 off i5 + mobo combo till the 31st. If you can't make it by then, they'll usually bring back the deal (or another). I called my MC and they said after the 31st another deal would be up but he couldn't specify what it would be exactly.

There are a lot of good mobos for around $100-$130 if you don't need the SLI function. But if you're going to upgrade I would suggest spending the extra $20-30 for something like a Asus/Gigabyte P8p67 PRO to have that SLI/CF security.

That cheap motherboard defeats the purpose of the 2500k... you can't OC on H61...

I think this would be a good choice for the motherboard, P67 for OCing and 4 DIMMs so you can hold your 4 sticks.

its for a SERVER you dont need a OC'd 2500k to run a minecraft server hence the cheap mobo

I would get an i5 2400 - it would be more than suitable and be a bit cheaper
