What should I upgrade?

Hey all,

I've been working like a whore for the last month and am finally getting paid soon.
I've been wanting to stick a GTX 580 in my sig rig for a while and an SSD. I'll be getting both eventually (after my next paycheck), but which should I get first?

For the SSD I'm not entirely sure which to go for. Budget is ~£200, no more than £225.

I'm considering the GTX 580 DCUII as I like my system quiet, but how much benefit is the Lightning? I'm not sure it warrants the extra pennies.

I'd like to keep the price of these as low as possible as I'm also trying to squeeze in another TB drive.

So any help and suggestions are welcome

The SSD won't do anything for your gaming aside from minimizing loading times.
The video card coming from yours won't make Windows operations any different.

Do you spend more time on the Windows desktop or in game.

Thats your answer.

Real weak point on your rig is your graphics card, Not that it is rubbish but compared to your other parts it is outdated. Go for a kingston 64gb ssd from aria pc, Nice and cheap also very quick

I'm not sure if OCN condones prostitution?

As far as the GTX 580 goes, Lightning gives you double the VRAM and a really cool Waterblock design can be added if you ever decide to go watercooling with it.

I dunno about the extra pennies though. I'm an AMD guy.

What are your opinions on the Chronos 120GB? I've found it for £169.99 which isn't too bad, means I can get a second F3 1TB and just break £200. Or I could go for the Vertex 3 120GB for £199.99, I hear they're releasing a new firmware this week.

Hmm, I realised this. Thing is the 5770 performs as well as I want it to right now. I want the 580 because I want all the candy for Skyrim and BF3, also might tempt my wallet in to other games but either way I won't see those games for a while. But then I also I wanted to sell my 5770 and the longer I keep it the more it depreciates.

I spend a fair amount of time on both tbh. But nothing with lots of loading screens.

Lol, I love that your starting line and suggestions have no correlation whatsoever

Also I'd like to get a 120GB as I can see myself putting a couple of games on it as well Hence the larger budget for an SSD, sorry should have mentioned it in the OP.

Haha, note the simile Anything for PC parts though eh? Does remind me of this story though.

Back on topic, so you think the Lightning is worth it? I've heard people say it's really loud though. Would be nice to hear from a user who has first hand experience.

I've been thinking about W/C, but I don't think I'll get there before this time next year, most likely the year after that, so I'll be hankering after a new GPU by then anyway.

Good SSD choices are the Crucial C300/M4, I got a 128GB of each for two different machines for under $200USD so they are definitely in your price range.

Other choice is a 64GB OS SSD then pair it with a 1TB Samsung F3 that will hold your games. Most games will load into RAM so a SSD would mostly help during initial loading and not during gameplay.

The 580 Lightning Xtreme will be a beastly card

I had considered adding an extra TB, would finally allow me to let my media whoring loose. However, I think I'll be ok for now and when I have some more cash to drop I'll go for a 2TB/3TB drive and give my F3 to the family.

Any particular reason you'd suggest those over the Vertex 3? New firmware seems to have fixed most all issues, not sure if I should plump for the Max IOPS though.
The standard is ~£190 and the Max IOPS is ~£220

EDIT: Having taken a quick look at the spec sheet for the M4 it seems significantly slower...

I really can't wait for the GPU now Good thing they're not getting it in until mid Aug.
