Easy way to see if a hard drive is dead?

So i have this old computer and my brother downloaded one of those check your pc for virsus and sure enough he got a virus on the computer which deleted all of the main programs (or just hide them) like command prompt, start menu, Etc.. so i bought a new hard drive and reinstalled windows xp and everything works fine again but the reason i could not recover the hard drive was everytime you turned on the computer it would come up to a blank sreen with a blinking underscore _ so i was wondering if there was a way to test the old hard drive... the new one didnt come with a sata cable so i cant hook both hard drives up at once...

You didn't need to buy a new Hard Drive, when you install an OS there is an option to format the HDD and delete everything on there.

Ok, so have you accessed the bios screen yet? You usually press F12 or Del during startup

I would just pull out your new HDD completely, insert your old one into the slot. Then insert your OS disk and format the HDD and erase what was on it.

Only way to make sure that everything is gone. Then buy an extra sata cord, and use the old one as a storage drive.

Blinking cursor of nothingness sometimes happens when your MBR is infected with a virus. Running /fixmbr /fixboot from your Windows CD's recovery console may fix it. (or mess things up worse, if that's possible tongue.gif )
